MARIETNA MASCOLO Obituary

MASCOLO--Marietna. Marietna (Mimi (the great)) (nee Petacchi) Mascolo passed quietly on September 14th, before the Giants took the field. Peter, one of her grandsons, opined that she left before the game started because she couldn't bear to see them lose again. Marietna was born and raised in the Bronx. She attended PS103 and Hunter College. She was a very proud Hunter College grad - you just had to ask her, and she would be sure to tell you. She married our father Peter Mascolo in August of 1959 and one of us was born in June of 1960 and the other in July of 1961. We remember when she (accidentally) set the backyard on fire in Milford Connecticut while talking to Mrs. Griswold (our neighbor on the other side of the duplex) about how we had not had a lot of rain that summer. She was the youngest of four children, a skinny little thing they fed wine (perhaps Johnnie Walker?) to stimulate her appetite. Perhaps it stimulated her cooking skills. She was a great cook. We remember (in)famous dinner parties that she and our father used to host with their friends when we lived in New Jersey. We remember all the great meals (except for one hotdog casserole and one meatloaf) that she cooked and her aspiration to own a restaurant which our father fully supported by making her take a back-of-house job at the Lake House Inn which did the trick. She became a substitute teacher. She also worked at the Pearl Buck Foundation which she loved and then moved on to work with the Bucks County Pennsylvania ARC where she spent almost 20 years supporting young people and adults with developmental disabilities. Marietna has people (cousins, nieces, nephews, friends) from New Hampshire and Rhode Island to Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, and South Carolina and Texas. Every place she has lived, she has made friends and left a legacy of spitfire, friend, confidant. She questioned everything, could take any side of an argument - sometimes both - she was authentic, she did what she wanted. She taught us to cook, how to multitask, how to make it all look easy, even when it's not. And it's not easy thinking about being without her. She is survived by us and our husbands, Todd and Steven, five grandchildren, Andrew and his wife Aisling, Harry and his wife Melly, Jeffrey and his wife Alison, Peter and Leah. And Jeff and Alison's baby Cameron, her great-grand- child for whom she produced the best smile all summer. We will miss her. With love, Lisa Mascolo and Amy Horowitz If you'd like to do something in her memory, you can make a contribution to the Medical University of South Carolina Hollings Cancer Center which treated her with kindness and grace. They are a research university, and she was their oldest patient, and they considered her to be one of a kind too.

Hi, I worked with Marietna at BARC Developmental Services in the early 2000s in Bucks County. She was extremely helpful in getting me oriented at my new job and was a great collaborator and co-worker, always looking to help and improve the workplace. RIP Marietna.

I did not know Marietna, but I saw your loving obituary in the New York Times and had to let you know how refreshing it was to read such a real homage to your mother. I am an 82-year-old grandmother who has been a Giants fan for at least 72 years uncertain understood her leaving before the game.

I didn't know Marietna or anyone in her family, but I have read this perfect obituary of her life twice. All obituaries should be this personal, not just a resume of work life and a list of family members. It is warm, heartfelt and funny. Hotdog casserole, really? Kudos to the family members who loved her enough to share a remarkable life in such an engaging way.

At Thanksgiving time she loved to help with the preparation of the dinner for perhaps 18 people. And during discussions, she certainly held her ground. She always made me feel welcome. A lovely lady.

Just read the very loving notice of your mother's passing. And wanted to write a note. You made me both miss my own mother - and be grateful that I was one of her children. What a wonderful and moving expression of love that was to come across in the Times this morning - I will be thinking of your mother today.

One of the fun times when Marietna and her sister Vilma would come to Rhode Island and treat myself Corinne and sister Nina and cousin Tom to Rocky Point amusement park and always to the beach! What good memories !
