Mark Coffiner Obituary

1947 - 2016
Dr. Mark Orrin Coffiner of Valley Stream, New York passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on July 2, 2016 at the age of 69. Dr. Coffiner was an adoring husband to Lynne, his wife of 45 years. He was a loving father to their three children, Kimberly Kaufman and her husband Spencer and daughter Colette of West Harrison, New York; Bradley Coffiner and his wife Sasha and twin sons, Noah and Jonah, of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania; and Tracy Coffiner of Valley Stream, New York.

Dr. Coffiner was a highly respected and well-regarded dentist in Brooklyn, New York, where he had an Endodontic practice for over forty years and mentored many colleagues, who referred to him as MC or the Hammer. He was planning on retiring in June 2017 to spend more time with his grandchildren, sadly to have his retirement plans cut short.

Dr. Coffiner was born on March 6, 1947 in Brooklyn, New York to Benjamin and Beatrice Coffiner. He had planned on going to dental school at a young age, prior to losing his father in 1967. Until her death in 2011, he was a devoted son to his mother Bea. He attended Wingate High School and subsequently graduated from Long Island University with a BS degree in Chemistry in 1968. In 1972, he received his DDS degree from NYU College of Dentistry.

He did a Rotating Dental Internship and Endodontic Residency Program from 1972 to 1978 at Jewish Hospital & Medical Center of Brooklyn and was Board Certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics in 1980.

His private practice was limited to Endodontics at Endodontic Associates at Hanson Place since July 1973. He was an Attending in Endodontics at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center and an Assistant Clinical Professor in Endodontics at NYU College of Dentistry. He was Chief of Endodontics services at Long Island College Hospital from 1986 to 2011, and most recently was an Endodontics Consultant at Lutheran Medical Center. He had reviewed Dental Malpractice cases and served as an Expert Witness since 1995.

Dr. Coffiner was passionate about cars, and enjoyed going to car shows in Carlisle, Pennsylvania in his spare time with his close friends and family. He enjoyed occasional family vacations in Hawaii. He was an eternal optimist who served as a rock and guidepost to his family, and always had helpful advice and suggestions to help solve any problem. He was an exceptionally loving and giving husband, father and grandfather, who did everything for everybody. He was a truly special person, one that you were lucky to have known. He will forever be an inspiration to his children and grandchildren. His family will miss him beyond words.

A funeral service was held on July 5, 2016 at Boulevard-Riverside-Hewlett Chapel, followed by burial at Beth David Cemetery in Elmont, and Shiva held by his family. Donations can be made in his honor to the American Heart Association. Trees can be planted in his memory in Israel through the Jewish National Fund.

Today I was told Dr. Coffiner passed away. I am so, so sad. He was not just a dentist but such a kind man. I am devasted by this news because not many people exist like Dr. Coffiner. He was kind, caring and a true person and people like him are hard to find. My heart is so saddened by this news and I can find no more words for my sadness.

I only saw Dr. Coffiner for one (very, very complicated) procedure - and just happened to learn of his death a couple of months ago from a dentist colleague of his. I thought he was one of the most incredibly gifted medical people I'd ever seen - so good at what he did. On top of that he had a sense of humor and was such a nice man. I am sure he will be missed by other patients, by his colleagues, his staff and of course his family and friends to whom I send my sincere condolences.

I was privileged to work with MC at Endodontics Associates for 5 years as I was attending college. MC was a great person and more importantly an expert in his field. He always spoke lovingly of his family. It was clear that his family meant more to him than anything! I am so sorry for your loss!

I only saw Dr Coffiner twice, a few weeks ago. I was immediately impressed by the man: an obviously hard worker with intense passion for his job and his patients. The kind of professional you rarely find these days: full of wit, wisdom and care. I learned about Dr. Coffiner's death from my dentist this morning and am still in shock. What a loss for Brooklyn. My prayers are with his family.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time. Try to recall happy memories of the times you shared with your loved one, perhaps by looking at photos. True, remembering those times might be painful at first. In time, though, these memories may help you to heal rather than cause you to hurt. Psalms 116:15
