MARTIN BERGMANN Obituary

BERGMANN--Martin. The Contemporary Freudian Track of The New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis mourns the loss of Professor Martin Bergmann, one of the leading scholars and practitioners in the field of psychoanalysis, beloved colleague, mentor, teacher and friend. We extend deepest sympathies to his wife, Maria Bergmann, son, Michael Bergmann and his grandson. Professor Bergmann died on January 22, 2014, just before his 101st birthday. Until the end, he kept a full schedule of students, patients, supervisees and writing. We witnessed his awe inspiring, creative odyssey through the latter part of his life. In addition to his treatment of patients and his teaching, especially of Freud, his prodigious contributions to the field included the areas of The History of Psychoanalysis, Nazism, Romantic Love, The Oedipus Complex, Psychoanalysis in Old Age and Shakespeare. Martin was passionate about teaching, independent and original thinking, new ideas and the uniqueness of each patient. He eschewed orthodoxy and fanaticism. He combined a formidable intellect with a sense of personal importance to patients and students. He was instrumental in preserving Freud's legacy but did so in a critical and intimate way. Martin was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia on February 15, 1913. He moved to Palestine when he was seven years old where his father, Hugo Bergmann became a world renowned scholar at the Hebrew University. He emigrated to the United States to study genetics. There he became interested in psychology. He served as a psychologist in the U.S. army and came to New York to pursue psychoanalysis. A memorial service will be held in the spring. I am deeply saddened by this great loss. He was a surrogate father in my life, My mother was in analysis for over 30 years & we were raised to be in analysis. When we had tension in the family the person who said let's table the discussion & ask Bergmann usually won. I feel like my father died again. I love you Martin Bergmann.
