1933 - 2021

NYDICK--Dr. Martin. Dr. Martin Nydick, of New York City and Palm Beach Gardens, FL, passed away in NYC the evening of June 28th, 2021. Martin was born May 1st, 1933 in Ridgewood Brooklyn to Rose and Harry Nydick. He spent his childhood playing stickball, going to Coney Island and hiking in Upstate NY. Martin is survived by his children Daniel Nydick and his wife Lisa Nydick, Jaye Nydick and her husband Jerry Lerner, Jennifer Nydick, and Carrie Nydick Finch and her husband J. Alex Finch. Martin has four wonderful grandchildren, Erin, Nora, Claire and Max. Martin is also survived by his brother Dr. Irwin Nydick, his wife Ellie, and their children Leslie, Alison, and Jonathan. In addition to his partner of 18 years, Constance Margolin, Martin is also survived by Constance's children, Drew (Liesl) and Dale (Richard) and their children. Martin attended Stuyvesant High School and Hobart College and completed medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Always known for his work ethic, Martin put himself through school on academic scholarships and by working at the student cafeteria. Martin became a clinical endocrinologist, with a sub-specialty in bone metabolism, seeing patients for primary care, specialized treatment, and pre- and post-op visits. Early in his career Martin collaborated on research projects in adolescent endocrinology at Memorial Hospital. After serving as a senior assistant surgeon in the United States Public Health Service at the National Institutes of Health, he spent two years at University of Washington training with Dr. Robert H. Williams. He and his brother, Dr. Irwin Nydick had a thriving private practice, affiliated with New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell and Hospital for Special Surgery, for over 50 years. Martin was an Associate Professor of Medicine at Cornell Medical College. He retired in 2015, yet continued as a Doctor Emeritus, teaching and mentoring young doctors. Martin lost his first wife Sheila to colon cancer at a young age and was subsequently married to Didi. Martin was an avid birder and naturalist, spending hours walking Central Park and the Florida inlets, and volunteering at Grassy Waters Preserve. He loved playing tennis and the NY Mets. He delighted in history, classical music, reading biographies, conquering the New York Times crossword puzzles, spending time with his family and friends, and traveling all over the world. Martin was an amazing son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be remembered for his unrivaled intellect, his industriousness and commitment to social justice, and, perhaps most importantly, his compassion and gentleness. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Martin's honor to The Cornell Lab of Ornithology and/or the American Civil Liberties Union. A public memorial service will be hosted on July 8th, 2021 at 3:00pm at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 West 76th street in Manhattan.
