MARTIN USDAN Obituary

USDAN--Martin J. "Marty", died peacefully on Saturday June 21, 2014 at Lenox Hill Hospital after a brief illness. Martin lived a life of distinction and elegance. He was a true New Yorker born at Lenox Hill Hospital, he grew up in Lawrence, LI and lived on the upper East Side of Manhattan for many years with his beloved wife Jane Bergere, their two daughters Jennifer and Jill. Martin served as a Lt. in the ARMY Corps of Engineers and fought in WWII where he and his company, liberated Anzio, Italy. Martin was a leader in the Paper Converting Industry serving as President of the Paper Club of NYC, President of The NYC Junior Chamber of Commerce and many other professional roles. Martin loved opera and musical theater. He had a gift for music and was known for his deep bass voice. He performed for 40 years with the University Glee Club of New York City. Martin was an avid golfer and a member of Quaker Ridge Golf Club and Muirfield Village Golf Club. He was a past President and current Board Member of his co-op on East 71st Street. Martin was a genuinely humane person of strong character and gentle spirit and will be sorely missed by his many friends and admirers. Martin is survived by Jane, their two daughters Jennifer and Jill, his daughter Mary and son Ralph from a previous marriage, three grandchildren, his brother Nathaniel, sons-in-law Christopher McBride and Harry DeVore and many other family members. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Martin's memory to the University Glee Club of NYC or The Metropolitan Opera Club. The funeral will be private. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Sorry to hear about Martin. I remember him as a young man over 60 years ago. His dad was my dad's uncle.
