MARTIN WHITMAN Obituary
American Friends of Tel Aviv University mourns the passing of Martin J. Whitman, of blessed memory, a staunch supporter of Tel Aviv University. He was the founder of the New York investment firm Third Avenue Management and through a series of major gifts to Tel Aviv University, Marty and his wife, Lois founded The Lois and Martin Whitman Scholarship Fund in 2008, and in 2015 launched the TAU Whitman Family Center for Coexistence. The Center awards scholarships to minority students enrolled in the MBA program at the TAU Coller School of Management. Whitman Family Center scholarships are directed to high-achieving Palestinian, Israeli-Arab, Druze and Ethiopian Israeli students. Marty was inspired to help minority students by his childhood experiences in the Bronx and his service in the Navy. His commitment to Tel Aviv University exemplified his extraordinary generosity of heart and spirit.
