MARY MOORE Obituary

MOORE--Mary B., a distinguished professor and internationally respected expert in ancient Greek vase- painting died in New York on May 3, 2025; she was 87 years old. Born in Manchester, NH on September 10, 1937, she earned her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. From 1971 until her retirement in 2008, she taught courses in Greek and Roman art and archaeology at Hunter College. During the summers for eight years, she participated in the excavations on the Greek island of Samothrace, affiliated with the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. During the 1980s and 1990s, she prepared the definitive publications of the Athenian pottery from the School's excavations at the Agora in Athens. Her numerous other publications focused on specific collections at the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as on the subject matter of Greek vase-painting. Mary Moore will be remembered for her scholarly rigor, sharp intellect, generous mentorship, and care for animals. Everything she did was also enlivened by her tart, irrepressible sense of humor. She is survived by her brother, William J. Moore, her two nephews, William and Andrew, as well as countless former students whose lives she shaped. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Contributions in her memory may be sent to the American School of Classical Studies at Athens.

A wonderful professor at Hunter College, I loved her Greek Classicism class I took in 2001 when I was first returning to school, for graduate study, I also enjoyed seeing her in the Watson library for many years later. Wonderful memories, Thank you Dr Moore

MBM was tough. Really tough. But she was also gifted, generous, and hilarious. She changed my life.

Mary and I were pen pals, when we were14 years old, until we were 28.
We both had red cocker Spaniel Spaniels, and Mary had written about her dog, Wink in Dog World Magazine. She was a wonderful friend thru our many letters and had a great wit. We drifted apart for many years, and then reconnected in the late 1990's, by phone. Sadly, we never met in person. I most recently spoke with her in 2023. She still had that great wit that I always admired. A very special woman!

She was one of my favorite professors. I've so often thought of her in the nearly twenty years since.
