Another year has passed, and you are not at all forgotten. Any time I have the opportunity, I share about you-the manager, mother-figure, humble servant, and friend who made such a great impact on my life and whose Christ-centered, caring leadership style I model my own after. I still miss you so much, but am comforted knowing that you in the presence of the Lord, smiling and joyfully praising.

It's been three years, yet rarely does a day go by that you're not in my thoughts and prayers. I miss you immensely and wish that we could talk and joke and have coffee like we used to. Hanna and Joshua would have enjoyed meeting you as well; you're one of the reasons we ever became a family, and I bet you'd have loved them so much. Please continue to watch over Kaavya and the family as they navigate life in your absence. Peace and blessings.

I have already put my thoughts into this guest book in June but wanted to write to Kaavya and tell her how I think of her beautiful sweet lovely mother Mary everyday. I have the two small cards that were given to us at the funeral with the pictures of Mary and Vishy. I so wish Mary was here to talk to. I have so much to tell her. Janice Lester

Kaavya,
My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. My father would not be alive today without the expertise, care and compassion your father demonstrated along with Dr. Winters at HUMC. For that I am forever grateful and may God Bless you always. Your parents will forever live in our hearts...

Dear Kaavya,

I had the great pleasure of working with your mother, Mary. She was one of my most favorite people. So kind, compassionate, warm and funny.

Only Mary could get away with wearing something 'on sale' that cost more than my car with such humbleness. And 'wear it well' she did because she knew that possessions were not what mattered in life, people were.

When my family members were experiencing health issues, she always reached out with her advice, a kind word, or encouraged your father to answer a few questions or look at some films.

You were her pride and joy. She 'kvelled' (a Yiddish word meaning bursting with pride) over your every accomplishment. I always know you were extremely special, but was not prepared for the exceptionally poised, self-assured, extraordinary woman who stood before the group at the funeral. Your parents would have been so proud.

I will miss your mother dearly. May your parents memory live on through you and all they touched, I know they will.

Kaavya,

How is it possible to cope with such a devastating loss? Mary would have known just what to do and say. She was so kind and compassionate.

Every once in a while, you work with someone who becomes a really special friend. That was certainly the case with Mary, who was as caring as she was smart. And always that great smile and wonderful sense of humor!

When I went through my own health crisis a few years ago, it was your mother's phone calls that calmed and comforted me in a way no one else's could. Those calls meant the world to me -- as did Mary. She was a remarkable person and will live in my heart forever. It was an honor to know her. Perhaps her greatest legacy is that she taught all of us how to treat others with kindness and respect.

I did not know your Dad, but obviously both your parents touched many lives in wonderful ways. May that provide you with comfort and strength in this difficult time.

He Came, He Saw, He Conquered!
These words aptly describe our beloved colleague Dr.Vishwanath Iyer. His sheer brilliance, easy smile and matter-of fact attitude towards life won our hearts and our respect during our medical school days.
I remember very well an anatomy lecture that was being given by Prof. Cooper. He was asking us some tough questions and getting minimal response from our class of 150 students. He then suddenly stopped and asked, “Where is Vishwanath?” Vish ( as he was known to us) always sat in the front row and always had answers for every question posed by our teachers. On that particular day, he was seated in the top most row of the class; he raised his hand and said, “Here Sir.” Dr. Cooper remarked, “Oh Vishwanath, you’ve become a silent celestial body today.”
Dr.Cooper was correct – he was always a celestial body! A star! And now he has joined the other celestial bodies. Two days ago, when I heard the news of his tragic death, I looked up at the dark skies and knew he and wife were there. God works in mysterious ways. One can’t question his actions. But they say that that ‘God takes them young whom He loves.” I bet you God was in desperate need of a neurosurgeon and that’s why he chose to take the best from us.
Kaavya, we know you’ve not met many of us. But if you ever want to know how brilliant, respected and loved your father was in his medical school days, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. We want you to know that you have many ‘aunts’ and ‘uncles’ all over the world, who would be very happy to connect with you and share stories.
God Bless you. Please accept our heartfelt condolences.

Viswanathan Iyer – A Salute
(aka Vichu or Vish)

We were the batch that came in through the President’s Rule
Which made us think that we were pretty cool
When we entered MMC, we were all still in our teens
And some so young that memory lane provides many great scenes

Along the way, with our hopes and fears
We learned and grew over the next six and a half years
We went through dissections and tests that would leave us in a daze
But there were also “kaliomas and Rende Vouz” in a mixed maze

Although unassuming and unpretentious you were
To question your talent and brilliance no one could dare
We always knew you were meant to soar
So it was no surprise to see the laurels galore

Times passed and lives changed, as we say
And our classmates took to many a divergent way
But we kept up with the achievements that followed your stride
And to claim you as our own, we always took particular pride

Your skill and brilliance led to your fame
But compassion, dedication & passion was your game
And those close to you were privileged to see
What a wonderful husband and dad you strove to be

Though numbed and saddened by this double tragedy
That has befallen Kaavya and your family
We the graduating class of 82 would like to tell
Vishwanathan Iyer, we salute you for a life lived fully and well.

Mary was such a lovely person inside and out. She was always a joy to be around. Mary was always generous with her kind words of advice or just laughter when it was needed most. I had the pleasure of working with Mary and getting to know what a humble and caring person she was. I did not have the pleasure of meeting Vishy, but it was never hard to see how much love and admiration Mary had for her husband when she spoke of him. I know their souls will find eternal peace and love just as they were in life.
My condolences to Kaavya and the rest of Mary and Vishy’s family, there are no words to begin to describe what you must be feeling. They were loving, compassionate people who will be terribly missed.

I miss you both every day. Kaavya I can't even begin to imagine your pain. Your father saved my husbands life twice. He reassurred me that cancer wasn't a death sentence and told me not to worry that he would always be there for me and my family, even in heaven I know he still will work his miracles. I remember his smile, his giggle. I remember his confidence and how without saying, how much he loved you and Mary. Mary, called me her little sister. She would call me or emal me weekly. She comforted me, she guided me and she reminded me daily that God healed and has me in the palm of his hand. Her strength and her love carried me through some of my very dark moments. Your moms smile and hugs still comfort me, I can see and feel them today. My life us better for meeting and knowing your parents. God took them at their best. I think of you everyday and pray you find peace.

Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am in a thousand winds that blow,
I am the softly falling snow.
I am the gentle showers of rain,
I am the fields of ripening grain.
I am in the morning hush,
I am in the graceful rush
Of beautiful birds in circling flight,
I am the starshine of the night.
I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in a quiet room.
I am in the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I do not die.
