Matthew BAXTER Obituary

BAXTER--Matthew Andrews, "Andy", 79, a prince among men and one of the last true gentlemen, died at his home in Lyme, CT with his family at his side on Monday, Feb. 21st. Born in New York City on April 18, 1942, Andy grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, attending Hawken School. He was a graduate of St. Paul's School (1960), Yale University (1965), and after several years selling insurance for The Equitable, earned his M.B.A. from Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business (1973). He began his career in finance serving in senior positions at Dreyfus Corporation, just as mutual funds were taking off. Following his time at Dreyfus, Andy became Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer of Instinet Corporation, which founded the electronic stock trading industry and became the largest electronic stock trading firm in the world. After retirement, in his second act of life, Andy committed himself enthusiastically to several organizations he held close to his heart. He served on the board of NatureBridge, an organization devoted to environmental education, where his son had worked. He served on the board of the Florence Griswold Museum and was a trustee of St. Paul's School. He served as treasurer and as a trustee of the Land Lyme Conservation Trust, as an overseer of The Amos Tuck School, and on the board of Vista Life Innovations. His involvement with and support of each of these organizations were profoundly impactful and an inspiration to all. His generosity and willingness to give of his time were boundless. Andy married Carley Cuniff, the love of his life, in 1984. Through her battle with breast cancer, Andy witnessed what quality end-of-life care could be. In Carley's memory, and in recognition of Dr. Peter S. Dixon's "good doctoring" at the end of her life, Andy created The Cunniff-Dixon Foundation with the mission of improving the art of medicine and surgery for people nearing the end of their lives. The Foundation has become a guiding light at the national level in honoring and enriching the physician-patient relationship in late-stage illness, promoting the value of palliative/hospice care and recently creating Planning My Way, an advanced health care planning guide. The Foundation's principles and Dr. Dixon's care enabled Andy, as Carley before him, to die peacefully at home with family and loved ones at his side. Among his many accomplishments, Andy was proudest of The Cunniff-Dixon Foundation and the gift it gave to physicians, patients and families across the country. It will remain his most important legacy. Andy roared through life. He believed in doing everything to the fullest, whether it was working, running a marathon, playing cowboy pool, fishing, entertaining or being a friend. Mentoring others was always more rewarding and of greater importance to him than any career success. Andy's wisdom and counsel, his kindness and enthusiasm, and his willingness to speak his mind will be sorely missed by many. Andy had two children with his first wife, Kate Baxter. He lost his son, Matthew Andrews Baxter III, in a rock climbing accident in 1996. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Eliza Riley, 49, of Mill Valley, CA, two grandsons, Matthew, 17, and Huck, 15, and his sister, Anne Baxter, whom he referred to as his best friend. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to: Cunniff-Dixon Foundation, PO Box 800, Essex, CT 06426. A memorial service will be held later in the spring, with details to follow.

I'm just reading this and so sorry to see. My belated condolences to his family. Andy was always kind at heart and kept active. He and Kate got me started in running.
A consoling thought is that he and Matthew are reunited. They'll have a lot of catching up to do. Thoughts and prayers to the family.

I sent, on a whim, about a year ago, an email to Mr. Baxter wanting to recount my days working at the Dreyfus Corporation and thanking him for his advice and opinions regarding my budding career in the financial field. I assumed a gatekeeper would intercept my email and perhaps Mr. Baxter would never see it. It was incredulous and an honor to actually receive an email back from Mr. Baxter himself. I had written this email as a "thank you" and to show appreciation and recognition for his giving me insight and advice as to my career. After this brief exchange of emails I was truly happy that my "thank you" was read by him and even more astounding he returned my email with a very sincere thank you to me. Just today I was rereading something about him which prompted me to look for him online. I shed tears when reading of his passing. He was a remarkable person, with a generous spirit with character, ethics and integrity.

I just learned of Andy´s passing and am heartbroken.
Andy was my pal, my mentor, my inspiration for almost 50 years.
He was the guy you looked up to in every regard. He was fun, he was competitive, and most importantly he cared.
He was the guy you always wanted to hang out with.
I am blessed to have known him and to have called him "friend".

I have been traveling abroad where the news of Andy's passing was slow to reach me. I was lucky to have met Andy in Yosemite at Matt's memorial. We became fast friends on the Yosemite Institute Board where we discovered our mutual love of fishing. We fished together in Yosemite, Idaho, the Bahamas and New Zealand. I have tons of great memories of fishing along side one of the most generous hearted guys I have ever known. I will miss him dearly.

Andy was a friend and mentor to me at his days at Dreyfus and Instinet. Sadly as our paths separated at the end of the 90's i have searched endlessly to reconnect. Moments ago through my desperate search i came upon this sad news. In one's lifetime you are blessed if you meet a person with such unconditional devotion as Andy. I was so blessed. Some 20 plus years later and Andy's love is still so current in my heart i feel like it was only yesterday i got tickets to an Islander hockey game, playing the Rangers. What a great day we had. Walking the golf course at Deepdale while the caddy drove with our bags in the cart. My heart is broken as i end my search for one of the most influential people to me in my life.

Dear Eliza, Anne, Matthew and Huck...We knew Andy as a board member at NatureBridge, when we were both staff in Yosemite. I (Alex) was the fortunate recipient of a Matt Baxter Fellowship award in the early 2000's that sent me to Zambia to learn hands-on citizen science in the incredible Kafue National Park for three months. Zambia is also where I met Adam, my incredible partner of nearly twenty years, now. The Baxter family was a catalyst in making possible one of the most important relationships of our lives, and our hearts go out to you all--Andy will be deeply missed.

My deep gratitude and admiration for this noble man. He took the pain of loosing Matt and turned it into a generous and transformative well of goodness for so many of us. Of course this wonderful human did this, and so much more. Light on the path for Andy!
Much love from Adonia and my life changing Mongolian Pony Riding Baxter Award journey.

I was just re-reading an email Andy sent to me, Phil and Ian in April, once the impact of the pandemic was being fully felt at NatureBridge. We were both board members, and I had the great honor of serving with him for many years together. In the email - in typical Andy fashion - he was providing the much-needed motivation and inspiration to carry onward, and provided both an honest assessment of the herculian task at hand, and the optimism that indeed it could be done. He truly was a "prince among men." In sympathy, Nicole

Dear Eliza, Anne, Matthew and Huck...
We knew your beloved father, brother and grandfather through his involvement with Nature Bridge. We also knew Matt who was a terrific young man and was taken from us way too early in his most promising life. I was Chair of the Board of Nature Bridge (then Yosemite National Institutes) when we lost Matt and shared that crushing time with your family and the YNI family. Andy took up the Nature Bridge mantle where Matt left off, making an impact in more ways that we can count. He was a prince of a man in every way we can measure. Whenever we saw him, he greeted us with his glorious smile and a huge hug. It was impossible not to love him. Being in meetings with Andy was always a treat even though I didn´t have as many opportunities as I would have liked. Our creativity always fed on each other which was such a great feeling. Andy´s vision to keep Matt´s memory alive through Nature Bridge was brilliantly done and will be there forever as an endowment. His incredible generosity led others to be so. Most of all, Andy will be sorely missed at Nature Bridge for his vision, good work, counsel, enthusiasm and inspiration. We are grateful to count him as our friend. We send you all our heartfelt sympathy. May Andy´s memory be a blessing. With our warmest wishes, Linda and Neill Brownstein

Hard to believe that Andy, so full of zest, has passed. May you now be at peace and reunited with the love of your life, Carley. Thank you for being a terrific boss years ago and sharing your wise counsel and wisdom.

It was a pleasure working with Andy at Instinet. The last time I saw him was in Central Park near the south end of the Mall. I'll never forget how he lit up whenever he talked about Carley. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing.
