MEHRAN GOULIAN Obituary

GOULIAN--Mehran (Micky). Hematologist and molecular biologist. Born December 31, 1929, Weehauken, NJ, died January 7, 2022 in La Jolla, CA from a subdural hematoma after a fall. Predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Susan Ann Goulian, nee Hook, (1938-2018), parents Dicran and Shamran Goulian, of Armenian descent, and brother Dicran Goulian, Jr. M.D. He graduated from the college (1950) and medical school of Columbia University (1954), and interned at Barnes Hospital at Washington University, St. Louis. He was then a research fellow at the National Cancer Institute of NIH, in Bethesda, MD and obtained further clinical training in internal medicine and hematology at the Grace-New Haven Hospital of Yale University, and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Upon finishing he sought further biochemical training, and became (1965-67) a fellow in the laboratory of Arthur Kornberg at Stanford University, Palo Alto CA working on DNA synthesis. After Stanford he joined the faculty of the University of Chicago School of Medicine, and then the Division of Hematology in the Department of Medicine at the University of California School of Medicine, La Jolla. He continued his bench work in the molecular biology of DNA, while active as a practicing clinician, investigator, and educator, and retired in 1995. He was a passionate violinist who often played classical music with friends in string quartets. He is survived by three children and three grandchildren.
