MELVIN DWORK Obituary

DWORK--Melvin.

The family of the late Arthur G. Cohen is saddened by the passing of Melvin Dwork on June 14, 2016 at the age of 94. Mel, a U.S. Navy veteran who served honorably during World War II, brought his sense of style and love of beauty to three generations of our family. Though recognized professionally during his 70 years in the interior design field as one of Architectural Digest's Top 100 interior designers and as a member of the Interior Design Hall of Fame, to Arthur and Karen he was more importantly a dearly-loved, good-hearted friend and welcome presence at family gatherings, while to their adoring daughters, Lauren, Susan, Debra, Rochelle and Kathy, and their nine admiring grandchildren, he was simply "Uncle Mel". We will all miss him.

Such a treat to get this message today. To remember Mel- his big smile and warm heart. The special visits to Shelter Island and those yummy breakfast of eggs with corn off the cob from the night before. The times we shared in Tribeca around the big stone table. I am blessed that I had the opportunity to have Mel in my life.

Mel and I met through James McGuire who was my lover at the time. Mel and I became lovers In the late seventies. Physically in those early years yes. Emotionally we were connected throughout the decades. The friendship never died, but believe me, I tested his patience and he mine every other day. Mel lost so many friends during the AIDS crisis. As an older gay man, he was so smart to form new friendships with the Next Generation and the generation after that. That he lost most of them and he still endured was very difficult. Memories... We took so many wonderful trips. To Sicily. To Morocco. To Key West with David McMahan. Mel had an insatiable curiosity for all things beautiful and true. Especially in objects of design. And he was the most stubborn and tenacious person I've ever met. And his graciousness and generosity were unparalleled. Fire Island Pines. Shelter Island. New York City. He gave me so many opportunities to meet incredible people, see fabulous sites, and just spend a lazy Sunday afternoon together. I'm so glad he passed when he did. He was ready. And I can feel him beeming with his eyes and smiling right now. I loved you Mel , and I love you now and forever. Our Melvino finally rests.
