MELVIN KATZ Obituary

KATZ--Melvin, 92, of Westport, CT, passed away peacefully early Sunday morning surrounded by his loving family after a blessedly brief illness. He lived a full and vibrant life. The child of immigrants, Mel personified the American dream. He grew up under the protective eye of his big brother, Jerry. After graduating from Brooklyn's Midwood High, he went on to Wesleyan University and then to the Harvard Law School. Mel was universally regarded as a brilliant and joyous man. As he grew to become a dean of the New York Securities Bar over his long and storied legal career, Mel also pursued his many loves, most passionately classical music, his New York Giants and skiing with his friends and family. Above all, Mel cherished his family. Mel is survived by his wife of 56 years and love of his life, Judy Katz, their children Jonathan Katz and Melissa Kane and her husband Jon, and his two grandchildren George Kane and Lily Kane. He is also survived by his nieces Andy (Susan) and Patty (Eileen) and his grand nephew, Harrison. His was a long life well lived. Services at The Conservative Synagogue, 30 Hillspoint Road, Westport, CT on Tuesday, March 19, 10:30 am.

Hello Judy
I was so sorry to hear about Mel. I will always remember him so fondly and our dinners out to Orsini's....the four of us. It was with his help that I got into Yeshiva's Social Work program and my life took a vastly different turn. Sending you love and sympathy. Sincerely, Jody Friedman

I have so many special and wonderful memories of time spent with Mel. He was always so supportive, generous, caring and fun.

I was 11 years old when Mel took me to my first pro football game. The Giants lost to the Colts on a cold November day at the old Yankee Stadium. Sitting in front of us were family members of Colts defensive end Bubba Smith. They were yelling, "Kill, Bubba, Kill," and that´s exactly what Smith was doing to the Giants. Just about a month ago when I spoke to Mel for the last time, he asked if I remembered "Kill, Bubba, Kill."

There were many shared afternoons with Mel and Judy at Giants Stadium watching the Giants and then driving back to the city for dinner. I specifically remember delicious dinners in Little Italy.

During the Knicks´ great days and championship runs, I would watch Knick home games with Mel and sometimes without Mel at their apartment on Central Park South. Mel and Judy had cable TV and our apartment building didn´t. They offered me the opportunity to watch Knick home games.

Mel wrote numerous college recommendations for me and in the past few years he tried to help raise money for my sports startup business. Mel introduced me to potential investors, made calls on my behalf and brainstormed about possible funding opportunities.

It isn´t that often that I save voicemails on my phone, but I saved a voicemail from Mel. After a professional meeting with my son Drew last year, Mel left me a heartfelt message saying how special, wonderful, kind and professional Drew was and how proud I should feel.

Mel had a way of really making you feel good.
