MENACHEM HACOHEN Obituary

HACOHEN--Menachem. The Officers, Board, and global staff of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) mourn with deep sadness the passing of Rabbi Menachem HaCohen, an Emeritus JDC Board Member revered for his wise counsel, integrity, and lifelong dedication to strengthening Jewish tradition and identity worldwide. A venerated scholar and leader, he helped build the State of Israel, served as a member of the Knesset, and established the Sapir Center for Jewish Education. As Chief Rabbi of Romania and JDC's Consultant for Religious Affairs in Eastern Europe, he worked with JDC to foster flourishing Jewish communities in post-Communist nations, contributing immensely to the resurgence of Jewish life, Jewish learning, youth programs, and more. Rabbi HaCohen was a passionate advocate for the care and dignity of Holocaust survivors. In 2023, he was honored with Israel's Presidential Medal of Freedom for his extraordinary contributions to the State of Israel. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Rabbi HaCohen's wife, Prof. Dvora HaCohen, their children, Prof. Aviad HaCohen, Miron HaCohen, and Chagit HaChohen-Wolf, their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and his many loved ones around the world. May Rabbi HaCohen's memory be for a blessing, and may his legacy live on for future generations. Annie Sandler, President Mark Sisisky, Chair of the Board Ariel Zwang, CEO
