My husband and I watched the services at Central Synagogue on Rose Hashanah and Yom Kipper. We now are retired and live in Florida. As the rabbi read the names of congregants who had passed away in the last year, we recognized Dr Silverberg´s name. I googled the name and realized that it was the same Dr Silverberg that we knew. I needed to reach out to you to tell you how kind he was to us.
Our daughter Pamela was born in Rockland County on 6/7/77. At three weeks of age she was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia. At that time, biliary atresia was a death sentence. The doctor at Columbia Babies Hospital told us that despite the surgery, Pam would die between the ages 2-5. We knew we needed another medical opinion. I don´t remember who called Dr. Silverberg for us one night.
He stepped out of a broadway show to take the call. Our intermediary told us that Dr Silverberg would see us the following morning. He was so kind and told us that he could not promise a quantity of life but he could promise a quality life. He gave us reason to be hopeful. We were only 29 years old. Eventually Dr. Daum and Dr. Aiges became her gastroenterologists. Dr. Keith Schneider, another wonderful, kind human being performed 3 Kasai procedures before Pam was 3 months of age. Eventually, cirrhosis set in and at age 8 she had a liver transplant in Pittsburgh performed by Dr. Starzl and his team. Today, Pamela is 44 years old and the mother of 2 healthy children.
We will always remember the day Dr Silverberg met with us and gently guided us to a decision that resulted in our daughter surviving and living a good quality life.

Sincerest condolences to the entire Silverberg family. Dr. Silverberg was instrumental in my career in pediatrics. Having graduated from the Autonomous University of Guadalajara, Dr. Silverberg admitted me to the pediatric residency program, at North Shore, as a January applicant. At the completion of my residency I was asked to be chief resident, probably the best year of my entire career. It was his and Harvey Aiges belief in me and my ability that set my career in motion.
Thank you Merv!!
May you Rest In Peace.
