I was a patient of for over 10 years plus. Dr. Dempsey was an amazing Doctor! He was my attending Physician when I first injured my ankle, then my lower back. He was very caring and through in his attention. Most importantly, he listened to the client and prescribed care accordingly. I was surprised when I heard he passed away. He will surely be missed by all who came into contact with this amazing being. My sincere condolences go out to his entire friends and family who knew and loved him.

Can it really be four years since you left us?
There will be a mass held for Dr. D. at Francis Xavier Church on 15th Street and Sixth Avenue in Manhattan at noon on October 27th. PJ will be there, and I hope that some of his friends and patients can make it, too. I'm sure that people will remember him, and his kindness, even if they cannot make it to the church service. But I hope that some can come.

I'm stunned to have tripped over this. I was a patient of Dr. Dempsey's some years ago, and suddenly needed to see him again. He was amazing - incredibly good at his job and an incredible human being as well. I despair of ever again finding someone as good and with whom I felt so comfortable - AND had such a good time! My virtual hugs to his family. And thanks for such wonderful, knowledgeable, compassionate care in the past. I'm so sad...

Dr. Dempsey was simply the best! I looked forward to seeing him, because he was the most effective Dr. I ever saw in treating my chronic pain, and he always put everything in perspective and made me feel I did have control over something that made me feel helpless, and made me laugh. I'm so sorry for his family. What a great man, and I barely knew him. How many lives he touched - even mine, and I probably never saw him collectively for more than an hour in my life. Truly, everyone's loss.

I am really shocked by his death, he treated me a couple of years ago for a herniated disc. He found out the ailment within five minutes, where I wasted three months going to different doctors to find out the reason for my pain. He was very funny, and joked a lot with me. I felt better when I visited him in his clinic. Such a fine doctor, my sympathies to his family. I would miss him.

My deepest sympathy to Dr. Dempsey's family. I just learned of his passing today, via FaceBook -- I was shocked and saddened at this tragic news. I was a patient of Dr. D.'s for 18 years in NYC. He was one-in-a-million. I've read all the comments left by friends, colleagues and patients, and I'm so glad for the tribute to such a caring, humane and talented Doctor. I missed you when you left NYC, Dr. Dempsey, and now am devastated over your passing. I hope you somehow know how much you meant to us all.

Dr Dempsey and I met at coordinated health in Brodheadsville .i was in a coma and on life support for two months and lost use of my left arm. Every doctor I went to could not figure out how to treat me. Then came my angel of mercy. Dr Dempsey not only diagnosed what was wrong but he also prescribed medication that eased my pain. The best was talking about the steelers, we both love the team. Dr Dempsey even went beyond and insisted that I have his cell number, I was floored at his compassion. I moved out to VA last January , and I went to search his office address and came across his obituary. I was so devastated. Dr Dempsey is loved by many of his patients and I'm more than sure colleagues . RIP my dear friend, and thank you so much for your compassion and goofy sense of humor and the laughs in your office.

Dr. Michael Dempsey was not only an accomplished doctor but also an amazing human being. Dr. Dempsey diagnosed me with very severe scoliosis as a mature adult. He encouraged me to see several surgeons until we found a surgeon that would take my very complex case. Under Dr. Dempsey's care, you knew this was a doctor that supported you, your health and your recovery. He was a man that believed in living your best life and encouraged you to be in tune with the most important things in life -- family and friends and having a quality of life. If it weren't for Dr. Dempsey, I don't know that I would have had the courage to undergo a major spinal reconstruction surgery at my age. I was always impressed when I was sitting in the waiting room of how patients would rave about Dr. Dempsey, his care and compassion and how we all really relied on him to get better and be the best we could be.
I hadn't seen Dr. Dempsey as I was recovering from my spinal surgery and was totally devastated when I called to make an appointment to hear of his passing. This is a tragic loss for all of us. He left us way too soon.
He touch so many lives in so many ways and leaves a rich legacy not only in the medical profession but for humanity. May God Bless Dr. Dempsey and his family. He will always be remembered.

Michael Dempsey, our dear friend, has passed on and left us with an aching void in our hearts...but...Michael with his wicked sense of humor and his compassion would not want us to be drowning in sorrow. Rather, we want to celebrate his life and his place of honor in our hearts. We shared many laughs, broke bread together, listened to music, and, ever the healer, he helped us with our various "aches and pains". Truly Michael was an intelligent, compassionate, fun-filled man...one we will miss tremendously. Our love and prayers to our dear friend, PJ. And...Michael, don't rest in peace...spend the rest of eternity in Tir Na Nog celebrating and having a grand time like a true Irishman! We love you and we miss you, Michael...

Dr. Dempsey changed my life. I knew we'd be cool as soon as we met. I enjoyed his direct, no bs, approach to talking about well, anything. He took care of me no matter what. When I lost my insurance he still saw me and made sure that I had enough of my daily fibromyalsia medication to keep going. Even after he left his practice he continued to take care of me. My husband and I are forever grateful for knowing him.

I became Michael's patient immediately before 9/11. He was one of the first doctors to be waiting at St. Vincent's Hospital emergency room, and despairing that there were so few survivors. He said he felt almost useless, only treating, "fireman with sprained ankles and sore shoulders."
I will forever remember his birthday, January 6th. He told me he was the Gift of the Magi. I believe that he was. My husband, Larry, and I were very grateful patients, and felt like we were close friends, even though we never socialized. I referred many friends who became his patients. They all found him to be an extraordinary physician, and amazingly warm, generous, funny human being.
Our thoughts are with PJ, in her time of adjustment. We were all so lucky to have known Michael Dempsey.

Missing Michael. Many New Yorkers were tested in the early days of the AIDS crisis, but none reacted more selflessly than Michael. Many in the medical profession acted on fear or prejudice. They actually added to the problem by isolating patients and not allowing visits or needed care.
Not Michael.
He stood by Nick when times were darkest and made sure he had proper treatment and care for what was then incurable disease. Never celebrated or held up for recognition by the community. Michael chose to help when it was not popular or fashionable. He acted without regard to reward, and I'll always remember his compassion, courage and willingness to stand up for what was right. He was one who made a difference. And he was proven right by history to have been an early hero in the pandemic of the century. I will always remember his dedication, and compassion. He was loyal, true and dedicated.

We had such wonderful fun times together and these memories will last me a life time. Our time was short but full of friendship. You were always there for me no matter what the problem. Michael Dempsey was an amazing doctor with an uncanny gift for diagnosis. He would immediately recognize the issue and suggest the appropriate treatment. He was also a person with tremendous compassion and a sharp sense of humor which did wonders to mitigate one's pain. He helped me for many years with back pain and eventually I would ask him first when I had any medical issue. I injured my hand and after a week of hoping against the odds that it was a minor sprain, I made an appointment to see him. He took one look and called it. He added that he hoped he was wrong (torn ligament) and suggested an x-ray to rule out a broken thumb. Then he found me a great surgeon. It was a comfort to know I could count on him and he always made time in his busy schedule. He was a tremendously gifted practitioner and a great friend to many. He will be dearly missed. My thoughts and condolences to his family and my thanks to his wife PJ for reaching out. May he be at peace.

I first met Michael and PJ on a transatlantic cruise. I was travelling with a terrible cabin-mate and I needed some refreshing dialog other than the inane remarks I was hearing. I somehow sat down next to them early on the voyage and we became immediate friends. I so appreciated his droll sense of humor and his ironic outlook on life. We laughed, we toured, we ate together and I looked forward to seeing them to escape my plight. They were a refreshing pleasurable change and I so enjoyed their company. We exchanged emails through the years and promised to get together but, alas, it never transpired. I regret not seeing Michael but look forward to seeing PJ in the future and laughing again at our antics on the ship.

I met Dr. Dempsey about a year and a half ago. We became quick friends from my first visit at the office. We had great conversations about his work and mine in Haiti. I was one of Dr. Dempsey's patients in the 1980's. He soon realized that I needed a different type of doctor and did not hesitate to refer me to another great person. Over the years, I scheduled appointments and he always made the time to see and help me. If it were not for Dr. Dempsey referring me to that other great doctor, I truly do not know where I would be today. He put his patients first to ensure that they were getting the care they needed. He was kind, supportive, funny and above all, he was honest and sincere. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. He touched the lives of everyone he came into contact with. He will be missed dearly. Linda
