MICHAEL KAPPAZ Obituary

KAPPAZ--Michael H. The Polytechnic Institute of New York University mourns the January 27, 2013 death of a treasured alumnus and trustee, Michael H. Kappaz '70. In 2010 he was awarded the NYU-Poly Distinguished Alumni Award. His service and dedication will be sorely missed. Among his many gifts to the Institute was the establishment of the Kappaz Graduate Fellowship Fund, which supports outstanding international master's degree students. His work and life has had a profound and lasting impact on our community, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Chafica, his six children, and the entire family.

Dear Chafie:
I am very sorry for your loss.
“Miguelito” was my senior by six years. When you are a kid without older brothers, you always pay attention to what your older cousins do.
Here is a recollection of my memories of his leadership and positive influence on the rest of the family, some of them probably unknown to you.
His participation in a successful ten-day walking expedition, along the sea shore from Cartagena to Puerto Colombia (near Barranquilla), that our uncle Jose organized.
His successful argumentation as an amateur boxing coach, to reverse a final decision of the judges in a match between two fellow students, during one of those Wednesdays dedicated to sports.
His handsome and manly appearance dressed in our Marching Band's uniform of Main Drummer.
His gift of my first ride on his borrowed motorcycle (uncle Jorge was not aware, for sure!).
His speech, charged with electricity, in the farewell to his own Class of 1961.
His baseball throwing from the centerfield fence, trying to avoid one of our rivals to score, above our catcher's head to the protection net behind the homeplate. What an arm!
The mix of sadness and sarcasm in his eyes when hearing the frequent “Winston Kappaz: to detention in the 4th level classroom”.
The first time I witnessed him speaking English, with a member of the Peace Corps that was a frequent visitor at uncle Jose's house.
The deafening applause after his lecture as special guest in the 25th Anniversary of La Salle Class of 1961.
The pride in his voice when he told us that Bechtel's former CEO (George Schultz) had been confirmed as new Secretary of State.
He will be sadly missed.
Please, extend my condolences to Winston, Julie, Maria Eugenia and Jose.

Dear Chafie and Family:
I'm so sorry to hear about Mike's passing. I enjoyed working with him in Cairo, and I had also kept in touch over the years and had stopped in to see him when visiting the Gaithersburg area when Ron Nestor was working with him. Mike called me up a few years ago, out of the blue, and I was so surprised and pleased to hear from him. He actually had some questions about some HR issues and had thought of me and found me in Alaska and called. We caught up and reminisced about family and people we had worked with. He still remembered the little gold star on some paperwork I had given him in Cairo, and we laughed a lot about that. He definitely was a remarkable man who worked hard but also made it enjoyable. He loved his family so much and was always sharing happy stories and accomplishments of and about all of you. My heart goes out to you in your time of sorrow.

God Bless.
Con todo carino

I am saddened by Mike's passing. Mike was my first supervisor at Bechtel in 1973; his mentoring and leadership-by-example did affect me and helped me in the development of my professional attributes and attitudes. One lasting lesson he imparted was that we should always take our company, our client's,and our colleagues very seriously - but to never take ourselves too seriously!

My thoughts and prayers to all of the Kappaz family.
