PORDER--Michael. The members of the New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute mourn the loss of our longtime member, Dr. Michael Porder. An esteemed and beloved teacher, supervisor and clinician, he was a widely recognized expert on the treatment of borderline conditions and co-au- thor of a classic book on the subject, Borderline Conditions: Psychoanalytic Perspectives. Mike was my primary supervisor in my early years of developing as a psychiatrist, on my way to becoming a psychoanalyst and he remained a lifetime friend and source of support. I do miss him.

Mike & Peggy are Ardsley lobby friends. Over the 41 years that we have lived in the Ardsley, we often saw them as we were coming and going. They both had greeted us with radiant smiles as if we were their best friends, and although we rarely spoke more than a few pleasantries in passing, their warm greetings and sparkling eyes contributed greatly to making this building our cherished home. We will miss Mike, and we send sincere condolences to Peggy and the Porder family.

Mike´s death is a devastating loss. Having met him only a few years ago in London, I was instantly struck by what a special man he was. He was exceptionally kind, with a wicked sense of humour. Our friendship has been a highlight of the recent years for me, and I am forever grateful for the time I got to spend with him. I will never forget his passion for Bach, his appreciation for the small pleasures in life, and his generous spirit. It was so clear to me how loved Mike was, and how many lives he touched. He had an incredible amount of life and love in him, and it has been a great joy and honour to have known him. I will miss him dearly, and my thoughts are with his whole family.

I saw Michael Porder for a consultation in 1968. I was a young confused Pathologist and the following week I was on the couch 5xs a week. My Analysis with Michael changed my whole life. He was a wonderful, caring Analyst with a unique talent for listening. I ended up followed in his footsteps and becoming a Psychiatrist, Psychoanalyst, and supervising ad training analyst. My wife , children, and I owe Michael a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid. He will be sorely missed.

I've heard of many deaths recently, but this one hits home the hardest. Mike was my private psychotherapy supervisor for years after I finished my residency, where he was a leading teacher. He led a group supervision made up mostly of my residency cohort at Einstein for several years. I have been in touch with him by phone, most recently just two or three weeks ago when I called him in response to hearing of Marty Willick's death. He told me at that time that Sandy Abend had died as well. He sounded well at the time despite describing some recent problems with balance. I was not prepared to hear that he had died. He will certainly be remembered fondly by many, not just for his wisdom and knowledge, but for his humanity.

As a younger cousin, Michael was someone I admired as we both group up in Brookline, Massachusetts. We became reconnected in New York when he welcomed my high school age daughter Laura into his home weekends while she was a high school girl traveling weekly to the Juilliard precollege program. Laura so enjoyed staying with Michael and Peggy for several years until her sister and I moved with her to the upper west side so both girls could complete their musical education at Juilliard. Laura continued to be close to Michael sharing time, stories and music with Mike in his apartment. I personally chatted with him on the phone and saw him enjoy by 80th birthday party and other events. I also feel connected to MIchael as his daughter spent summers at Belvoir and his son Joey has become an important doctor for me with some help also for Laura. The porter family are family and so MIchael will be missed but always with us in a positive memory. He was a smart, strong wonderful human being , a contributor to family and to his many patients. I send my condolences to the many who had the privilege of knowing Mike, his wisdom, compassion and humor. I was fortunate to have him as my supervisor (and mentor) during training, and for some years after graduation. Later his support during a difficult time was invaluable. He was a beloved presence in so many lives and will remain so in my thoughts.

I was stricken by the news of Mike´s death. He was such a vital person, such a warm, funny, compassionate man. He was also a great clinician, teacher, and supervisor. His spirit lives on in his family and those of us lucky enough to have known him. My condolences to us all.

My wife, Debbie, and I send our deepest condolences to Mike's entire family. In his wisdom, directness, and open-heartedness with his patients, students and other colleagues, he ever remains an inspiration for not only how to be a compassionate human being and a true mensch--but how simultaneously to embrace reality and fully love life. I will forever miss him as a a beloved father-like mentor, as I know will so many of my colleagues at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute.
