MICHAEL SAMBERG Obituary

SAMBERG--Michael, "Big Mike", died on September 16, 2022 in Sacramento, California at the age of 101. He received his Bachelor's degree from City College and his Master's degree in mechanical engineering from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. He worked for decades in high-speed manufacturing rising from engineer to Vice President for Manufacturing of Talon Zippers. Mike was devoted to political engagement in progressive causes, and despite a military deferment as a weapon's designer, he enlisted in the infantry to fight Fascism during WWII. He served in the 26th Infantry Division, helping to liberate the Saar Valley, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. For military action without regard to personal risk, he was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with V for Valor, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, and was appointed Chevalier of the Legion D'honneur de France. For these awards he will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Beloved husband of 70 years of the late Ruth Sapan Samberg; devoted father of Mark and Marcee, and Eslee and Eric; adored grandfather of Josh, Nina, Raphael, Max, Meredith, Pia, and Michael, and great-grandfather of Dora and Mika. His intellectual brilliance and generosity of spirit will be forever cherished by his family. Friends may donate in Mike and Ruth's honor to The League of Women Voters, an organization close to their hearts.
