MICHEL DAVID-WEILL Obituary

DAVID-WEILL--Michel. The Trustees and staff of The Metropolitan Museum of Art mourn the passing of Michel David-Weill. Michel was elected Trustee in 1984, Benefactor in 1987, and Trustee Emeritus in 2009. A formidable business leader, Michel was also an art enthusiast whose passion and dedication to the Museum endeared him to all of us at The Met. An avid collector in his own right, he had a particular interest in Renaissance and 18th-century French art. Michel was also keenly fond of The Met Cloisters and provided wide-ranging support for the Department of Medieval Art and The Cloisters, including funds for the renovation of the Museum's Treasury. The Medieval Art and The Cloisters Curatorship in Charge is named in Michel's honor, and in 2005, he created the Michel David-Weill Fund for exhibitions and publications. He also provided generous support to the Department of European Paintings and the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts, among other gifts. As Trustee Emeritus, Michel maintained an active presence at the Museum, serving on the Visiting Committees for the Department of European Paintings, the Department of Paintings Conservation, and the Department of Medieval Art and The Cloisters, of which he was Chair. A singular individual, he was a consummate host and always generous with his time. We extend our condolences to Michel's wife, Benefactor Helene David-Weill; their daughter, Trustee Beatrice Stern; and their family. Candace Beinecke, Co-Chair; Hamilton E. James, Co-Chair; Daniel H. Weiss, President and CEO; Max Hollein, Marina Kellen, French Director.
