MILDRED HELLERSTEIN

HELLERSTEIN--Mildred.

(June 29, 1936 - March 4, 2017) Millie was a feisty, funny and intelligent woman. She was born in the slums of the Bronx, excelled as a brilliant math student at the Bronx High School of Science and Barnard College, and was among the first who applied computer systems analyses to solve business problems. She was on the team of computer analysts tabulating and predicting the Nixon-Kennedy election in 1960. After retiring to raise three children, she applied her mathematical and administrative skills to organize the budgets of the Amit network of schools in Israel, becoming Amit's Treasurer and Administrative Vice-President. Her talents, applied in frequent budget reviews in Israel, enabled the Amit network to grow to 110 schools, and to become an exemplar of values-based education, raising poor and recently-immigrated Israeli children to high academic and technological levels, sensitive also to Jewish moral and religious values. Millie died this past Saturday morning, overcome by a cruel combination of Alzheimer's and COPD. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Alvin Hellerstein, her brother, Irwin Markow, her three children, Dina, Judith and Joseph, and seven grand- children, Ruth, Leah, Michael, Samuel and Solomon Hellerstein and Rachel and Jack Metzger.
