MILDRED WEISSMAN Obituary

WEISSMAN--Mildred. Mildred Weissman of Rye, NY, passed away peacefully at her home on February 6, 2022, at the age of 102. A lifelong supporter of women's rights in the arts, education, and other fields, she served on the boards of the Jewish Museum and Lilith Magazine, and she was a founder of US/Israel Women to Women, now part of the National Council of Jewish Women. She was also a major supporter of the National Museum of Women in the Arts and the National Women's History Museum. Together with her husband, George, she was a strong supporter of The City University of New York. Mildred served on the board of The Scholarship & Welfare Fund of the Alumni Association of Hunter College, her alma mater, and supported her husband's alma mater, Baruch College. Mildred and her husband were committed supporters of civil rights. After World War II, they were required to move from their apartment in Stuyvesant Town, a housing development erected for returning veterans, for working with a group of residents who were trying to integrate it. When the New York Times ran an article in 2006 on this topic, Mildred recognized herself in the article's accompanying photo because she remembered the two-tone shoes that she was wearing. A native of Brooklyn, NY, she shared a January 30th birth date with the man she called "my president" - Franklin Delano Roosevelt. She was pre-de- ceased by her husband of over 65 years, George Weissman, a former Chairman of Lincoln Center. She is survived by their three children, Paul, Ellen and Dan, their grandson, Leo, as well as many nieces and nephews. Donations in Mildred's memory may be made to the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) or the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA).
