Milton Hassol Obituary

HASSOL--Milton D., Ph.D., 78, of New York City and Sherman, CT died on December 1, of lymphoma. Adored father of Jeremy Cass Hassol. Beloved brother of Rita Lowenthal of Pembroke Pines, FL. Caring uncle of Richard Lowenthal of Austin, Texas and and Mark Lowenthal of Berlin, Germany. Dedicated scholar, inspirational teacher, compassionate therapist, loyal friend. Dr. Hassol was retired as Chairman of the Department of Philosophy at CW Post Campus of Long Island University, where he had been on the faculty since 1967. He received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Columbia University in 1966 and taught there from 1960 to 1967. In 1973 he received a Post Doctoral Certificate in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis from NYU and had practiced until recently. He was a member of the NYU Psychoanalytic Association. His great passion was the study of ethics and morality and its relevance for psychiatry. Since 1985, Dr. Hassol served as President of the Board of the Neustadt Collection of Tiffany Glass, a New York nonprofit organization with a world-renowned collection of Tiffany lamps and glass. Contributions may be made to the Neustadt Collection of Tiffany Glass. A memorial service will be held on December 19, 2008 at 1pm at the Plaza Jewish Community Chapel, 630 Amsterdam Avenue at 91st Street, NYC.

I extend my sympathy to Milton's family. Milton and I married in 1953, both of us very young indeed, Milton an exceptionally bright and perceptive person, and a promising scholar. We did wonderful things together: many months in Paris, studying in Oxford, biking around France. Simply living.
