NANCY RUDOLPH Obituary

RUDOLPH--Nancy,

died peacefully at her home in Lafayette, CA on May 1, 2017. Born December 26, 1923 in Brooklyn, Nancy Kallman Rudolph was a photographer and spiritual-seeker who travelled the world capturing remarkable images on her camera and making friends and creating meaningful relationships wherever she went. She is survived by her son John Rudolph and daughter-in-law Kathy Gunst of South Berwick, ME and her granddaughters Maya and Emma Rudolph; and her daughter Lucy Rudolph of Berkeley, CA, and her grandson Isaac Lomprey. Her photographic career began in the late 1940s. While working for the Marshall Plan in Rome she documented post-WWII Italy and Germany. Returning to the U.S., Nancy turned her lens on a wide range of subjects from coal miners in Appalachia to butchers on Manhattan's West Side to members of the Coney Island Polar Bear Club. She traveled extensively in India where she sought to deepen her Buddhist practice while also photographing the country and its people. Her work brought her to the Middle East, the Caribbean, Latin America and throughout Southeast Asia. She photographed extensively on Martha's Vineyard where she spent many summers and in Taos, NM, where she lived for a number of years. She loved children and produced articles and two books about play and playgrounds. For many decades Nancy lived in Greenwich Village. She cared deeply about the neighborhood and was well-known on her block and throughout the community. You would often hear her distinctive laugh as she talked and joked with neighbors she met on the street. Donations in Nancy's memory can be made to the American Indian College Fund and the ACLU. A memorial is being planned. For information contact [email protected] or [email protected].

I REMEMBER MEETING NANCY DURING THE MINERS STRIKE I SHOWED HER AROUND I NEVER SAW HER AGAIN BUT SHE WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBER FOR HER SMILE

She had a wonderful spirit and was an inspiration to me. I've thought of her many times over the years and
wished I had nurtured a real friendship with her. Her photographs found the beauty
and dignity of people regardless of their 'station' in life. Her camera captured the balance and elegance
in the ordinary that most of us would never have noticed.
