Naoko Kobayashi Goto

Naoko Goto Obituary

GOTO--Naoko Kobayashi, died in Tokyo unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 26, at the age of 46. Beloved mother of Lisa, daughter of Takashi and Ayako Kobayashi, cherished friend of The Brearley School and Isetan Co., Ltd. communities. Naoko was raised in Tokyo and attended Gakushuin elementary school, high school and college and came to this country after marrying Morihiko Goto, managing director and head of international sales at Utendahl Capital Partners, L.P. Her father, Takashi Kobayashi, is an executive advisor of Fukoku Mutual Life Insurance Co., which he served formerly as chairman and chief executive officer. Her mother, Ayako Kobayashi, is a professor of English language and literature at Tokyo Kasei University. Naoko was a woman of exquisite grace and rare intelligence who prized friends and family most importantly, and gave unstintingly of her warmth to all she knew. She was an active parent at The Brearley School, one of many benevolent involvements. Naoko was a member of the Junior League and of Nadeshiko Kai, a Japanese women's organization; she was also a volunteer at Memorial SloanKettering Cancer Center. Naoko worked in the New York office of Isetan Co., Ltd., a leading Japanese department store, in administration and translation. An accomplished linguist, she had received a master's degree in German literature from New York University, had taught Japanese at The New School and was enrolled in the graduate program in English as a second language at Columbia University Teachers College. But her proudest achievement was her wonderful daughter, Lisa, whom she treasured. She will be missed by all those who loved her in the Brearley and Isetan communities, and in the many circles where she was known. She is survived by Morihiko, her parents, her daughter, Lisa, and by two sisters and one brother. A memorial service in New York will be held in the spring.

Lisa, Mori, & Family,
Naoko will always be remembered fondly by Chris & I. Those great BBQs at the summer house in Greenwich! From our conversations in the kitchen, I found her to be a beautiful person, both inside & out; extraordinarily intelligent and sensitive. Lisa, I know your mom is proud of you and loves you. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. May Naoko rest in peace.
Warmest regards from the McLaughlins.

Naoko, I still cannot believe you have left us. Attended the friends' gathering in Tokyo on Sunday. Did you see, from Heaven, so many of your friends who will miss you?
Lisa, you were growing in your mother when I visited New York. Please remember she has been and will be in our hearts forever.
Morihiko-san, please accept my greatest sympathy. The memory of my stay at your apartment in 1988 seems just a while ago.

Dear Lisa,

I remember that she was excited to go back to business when I visited her and met you for the first time in Summer 2000. She has been very active since I knew her in kindergarten through high school and accomplished much while she was in this world. Please know that your mother made many friends in both Japan and NY and we all miss her so much. You are a part of her and you will always be in our hearts. She will be waiting for us in heaven when it is time for us to go home.

Love and Blessings,

Naoko was a very close friend of mine. I shared many times with her over foods and conversations. It comes as a shock to me because she was a woman with a kind heart and amazing sensitivity who has touched me in ways. My thoughts are with her family and her close friends, especially Lisa.
