NATHAN CHAVIN Obituary

CHAVIN--Nathan Allen. Nathan "Nick" Allen Chavin died peacefully on March 15, 2023, in Boca Raton, FL, at the age of 78. Nick was born in Chicago, IL, on July 3, 1944, to Muriel and Irving Chavin. Irving's career brought the family to El Paso, TX, when Nick was in the eighth grade, a move that greatly influenced his later artistic endeavors and sparked his lifelong love of Texas football ("Hook 'em Horns"). After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in English, Nick headed to San Francisco, where he obtained a master's degree in creative writing from San Francisco State University, and spent the summer of love in Haight-Ashbury (and sneaking off to football games). During his time in California, Nick spent years living in Marin County, where he met and married his first wife, Marsha Parker, and their daughter, Brandi, was born. Dipping his toe in many things, Nick taught adult GED classes, put out a satirical rock album, and wrote a few novels. Nick found his true calling, however, with real estate advertising in Manhattan, the city that fit him like a glove. In an award-winning career spanning four decades, Nick promoted some of Manhattan's most exciting real estate developments. In 1988, Nick married Teresa "Terry" Weldon and they had two sons, Maxfield and Drew. Terry and Nick spent many wonderful years in New York, raising their sons and living to the heartbeat of the City. Nick will be remembered always for his quick and sharp wit, his love of playing music, and above all his exceeding talent as a beautiful wordsmith. Nick is survived by his wife, Teresa; his children: Brandi and husband Derek, Maxfield, and Drew; his sister, Judi; and his nephew, Beau. P.S. Hey Dad, look, your name was in the New York Times today.

Nick Chavin died in Boca Raton, Florida, on March 15, 2023. In a remembrance, longtime friend and collaborator Kinky Friedman said, "He´s a guy who had a lot to offer. He really walked his own road. I spent some time with Nick when we both worked at Bernard Hodes Advertising. One night Nick took me to the Iridium Night Club in NYC to see Les Paul playing. Rest in Peace Mr. Chavin.

Quite a quirky guy. Glad I got to him. Better that I got to know him better thru this documentary. He was an amazing person with great character. TY Nick.

Condolences to Mr. Chavin's family and friends. What high school did he attend in El Paso?

For about twenty years, Nick was my best friend. Mainly during the sixties in Austin and the seventies in California. Geography and life caused us to gradually drift apart, but never entirely.

The imprint he made on me was permanent and powerful. He introduced me to poetry, verbal acuity and some very strange cookies. The latter never stuck but the former two became mainstays.

He taught me to live zestfully, with an inexhaustible curiosity and enthusiasm for life. And he taught me wit and humor. Under his aegis, the routine became exotic and the pretentious were pulled back to earth.

Like a comet, he burned through my life. I was privileged to be among his tailings. Even as I carry many of his habits, I miss him mightily. He would wrestle with me on this, but in his honor I say the Kaddish. Greg Lipscomb, [email protected], Austin Texas, 4/11/23
