NATHAN TAFT Obituary

TAFT--Nathan D. We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of our friend, colleague, and partner, Nathan D. Taft. Nathan dedicated his work to the belief that capital could be raised to impact the world for greater good: to build fairer, greener communities, to develop and preserve affordable housing, and to transform the built environment and communities for the betterment of all. Nathan joined our much smaller firm in 2004, drawn and committed to its mission, and filled our office with his intellect, tremendous enthusiasm, and questioning mind. He was key to the launch of our first social impact fund in 2005 and to its success, creating the foundation of our thriving investment business, which under his leadership and guidance as Chief Investment Officer has grown to preserve and develop 20,000 units of affordable housing across over $4.5 billion of real estate. More importantly, his work has impacted countless lives who now have access to healthier, greener places to live and work. Nathan infused the company with his passion for business as a force for good, he mentored generations of rising leaders, and he grew an extraordinary network of important relationships for the firm. Countless former interns and analysts have gone on to be industry leaders in their own right, rising from Nathan's tutelage, and Nathan's profound commitment and vision will forever inspire our own work. Nathan was an active member of the community development, real estate, and impact investing community, serving on the boards of the Goddard Riverside Community Center, Impact Capital Managers, and the Urban Land Institute's Affordable Housing Council. He was an Aspen Institute First Movers Fellow and a board member of the Yale China Association. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Hyang- Sook "Soogy" Lee, his children Wallis and Eli, his parents Louise and Thomas Taft, and to all those whose lives he touched. My sympathy to Nate's family! I knew him in college and immediately after college, when both of us worked for the Yale-China Association. Nathan taught me my first non-textbook sentence of Mandarin Chinese, after I told him I was scared by the crowds of Chinese children who used to surround us in public. "Snot is running from your nose," is the sentence he taught me. It's a gorgeous phrase to pronounce in Mandarin, and it tends to surprise children enough that they'll make room for you to move away. That was Nathan, always: impeccably mannered and also hilarious.
As I remember it, in the mid-1990s in Changsha, there was only one dance club. They hired every single Yale-China teacher to be their backup dancers, then, after two weeks, fired all of us except Nathan. "We thought all Americans could dance," they told us. "We were wrong. Only Nathan can."

The Board of Directors, staff and volunteers of Goddard Riverside are deeply saddened by the passing of Nathan D. Taft. As a teen, Nathan volunteered with families impacted by homelessness. This experience set him on his life´s path. While employed at Jonathan Rose Companies, he oversaw the acquisition and preservation of 20,000 units of affordable housing. His mission extended to serving on the boards of the Goddard Riverside Community Center, Impact Capital Managers, and the Urban Land Institute's Affordable Housing Council. At Goddard Riverside, he leveraged his kindness, thoughtfulness and expertise to help build our capacity to expand housing in NYC. Nathan's legacy continues through the impact he has had on countless lives, providing them access to more hospitable, healthy, and environmentally sustainable housing. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. We offer our heartfelt sympathies to his wife Soogy Lee, his children Wallis and Eli, his entire family, friends and all whose lives he touched.

Nathan was my trusted and good friend in High School in Santa Barbara. We were both on the track and cross country team. We both ate lunch with each other in the early years, and even took our dates to Prom together. I recall his loving family. I often thought of Nathan, and it is not a surprise to see him be so successful in life, I wish we kept in touch with each other. He was that special friend that you could trust and depend on, always there if you needed a friend. I hope to celebrate his life if there is a gathering in Santa Barbara.

Nathan made our Spanish 101 class memorable for me with his kindness and sense of fun. How he did this at 8:30 every morning after a trek up science hill, I don´t know, but he did. I will miss him.

I worked with Nathan in the office of Yale Undergraduate Admissions. Nathan was one of the nicest, down to earth guys you ever meet. Always friendly, professional and easy going.
To his family I am very sorry for your loss. God bless all of you and may he rest in peace.
