NICHOLAS HORROCK Obituary

HORROCK--Nicholas M. Nicholas M. Horrock, a distinguished journalist for the New York Times and many of the nation's great publications died of heart failure on Sunday, April 18, at his home in Alexandria, VA. He was 84 years old. Born and raised in Manhattan, he lived a full and adventurous life, covering wars, uncovering atrocities in prisons, and exposing the many ills in urban housing projects. He wrote about the illicit drug trade and daringly took on high powered officials in the CIA and the IRS with numerous front page stories. Fiercely competitive, he battled daily with the famed Watergate team of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein at the Washington Post and in the world of journalism he often achieved great success and accolades. At 18-years old he started his career at the New York Times taking ads in the old Times Square building. After earning a degree at American University at night while working as an insurance investigator during the day, he went on to work for the Perth Amboy Evening News, The Baltimore Sun, The Washington Daily News, Newsweek, and the Times. For 10 years he was the Washington Bureau Chief for the Chicago Tribune, followed by a stint as White House Correspondent for UPI and managing editor of the Washington Examiner. Mr. Horrock co-wrote three well received books. With Evert Clark, a Newsweek correspondent, he wrote "Contrabandista," a nonfiction account of heroin smuggling into the United States. Under the pen name, Henry Horrock, he wrote two murder mysteries, "Blood Red, Snow White" and "Potomac Fever" with his wife, Diane Henry. Horrock loved women and married three: Mae Seward who preceded him in death, Mary Ann Kuhn of Little Washington, Virginia, and Diane Henry in Alexandria, Virginia. He is survived by three children, Christopher Horrock, Timothy Horrock, and Victoria Horrock, and four grandchildren. Covid has delayed a memorial, but a celebration of his life is planned for April, 23 2022. Details can be found at nicholashorrock.forever missed.com
