NICHOLAS KEPROS Obituary

KEPROS--Nicholas, an American actor whose career spanned five decades, died of complications following a stroke, on Thursday, January 26th in New York City. He was 90. He is survived by two brothers, Peter and John Kepros, and a cousin, Vasilis Palikaris. Nicholas George Kepros was born of Greek parents in Salt Lake City, Utah, on November 8, 1932. An outstanding student, Nick attended medical school at the University of Utah. However his life was permanently altered when he saw a performance of a touring production of "Medea" starring Judith Anderson, after which he quit medical school to pursue a career in the theater. Awarded a scholarship to RADA, he departed Salt Lake and never looked back. He returned to the United States to embark on a long acting career, appearing in dozens of Broadway shows, regional theater productions, television shows, and over thirty feature films, including "Amadeus" - for which he had received a Drama Desk Award nomination for his role in the Broadway play. Fascinated by Greek culture and theater, Nick divided his time between his apartment in Manhattan and his flat in Athens. He was proficient in five languages, wrote three plays (two of which were produced) and led a wide-ranging social life that reflected his urbane, cosmopolitan nature. He was also a brilliant teacher, an ideal traveling companion and a devoted friend who will be dearly missed. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Nick's name to The Actor's Fund of America, 729 5th Avenue, New York, NY 10019.

Just found out about Nick's death now (September 3). Had wondered why I had heard nothing from him, no responses to my attempts to reach him. He was a dear man, a fine, generous soul, brilliant and observant. I visited him in Greece a few years ago, and it was wonderful to see him on his other "home turf." I first met him when he was working at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. His portrayal of the fool in King Lear was spellbinding; I saw it several times, and finally went to meet him backstage. It was a loss to that company when he returned to New York. Also saw him on Broadway in Amadeus-- he was pitch perfect. A special man and artist.

I'm so sad to lose him as a friend and colleague. He was a gem of a man and actor, and he's probably making his entrance onto Olympus right now.
