Norman Birnbaum Obituary

BIRNBAUM--Norman, born February 13, 1925, died September 12, 2007. Norman Birnbaum, the son of European Jewish immigrants, was born in Union City, New Jersey. His family (father Jack, mother Lena, sister Sylvia, and brother Philip), later moved to Teaneck where they were one of the first Jewish families in that community. In 1943, at the age of 17, Norman enlisted in the US Marine Corp. and served with distinction until his Honorable Discharge; he had been wounded pulling another serviceman from a burning plane. Norman was a proud marine until the day he died; his doorbell at home sounded out "The Halls of Montezuma." Semper Fi. After the war Norman went into the embroidery business with his father and in 1947 married Arlene Steinlauf of the Bronx, NY. In the late 1960s he built "Stonehenge", at the time the tallest standing residential building in the state of New Jersey. The circular tower on the Jersey Palisades is still seen by millions as they commute to work daily. Norman is survived by his three beloved children, Stuart, Roger and Elynn, his brother Philip, and five grandchildren. Please forward donations in his memory to "Happiness is Camping for Children with Cancer", 2169 Grand Concourse, Bronx, NY 10453-2201.

My memories of Norman Birnbaum are no longer vivid, for many years have passed since I last saw him. However, in a way that will suffice, because the memories I do have are abundantly rich with life, laughter, great momentum, unforgettable family social gala's and of course Norman's large and generous blanket which engulfed us all in warmth and pleasant memories. I am blessed to have been a part of it.
Thank you, Norman Birnbaum you will be missed.

As I write this the sun is rising over the ocean and thunder rolls in the distance. Norman was a force of nature who has changed venues.

Did not know Norman but knew Roger and most especially Stuart. In many ways then I also knew the man and he was proud of his children I am sure. My condolences to the family and my thanks to a man who served his country as well as his neighborhood. A salute to 'Stonehenge' when next I drive by.
