Norman Birnbaum

BIRNBAUM--Norman, born February 13, 1925, died September 12, 2007. Norman Birnbaum, the son of European Jewish immigrants, was born in Union City, New Jersey. His family (father Jack, mother Lena, sister Sylvia, and brother Philip), later moved to Teaneck where they were one of the first Jewish families in that community. In 1943, at the age of 17, Norman enlisted in the US Marine Corp. and served with distinction until his Honorable Discharge; he had been wounded pulling another serviceman from a burning plane. Norman was a proud marine until the day he died; his doorbell at home sounded out "The Halls of Montezuma." Semper Fi. After the war Norman went into the embroidery business with his father and in 1947 married Arlene Steinlauf of the Bronx, NY. In the late 1960s he built "Stonehenge", at the time the tallest standing residential building in the state of New Jersey. The circular tower on the Jersey Palisades is still seen by millions as they commute to work daily. Norman is survived by his three beloved children, Stuart, Roger and Elynn, his brother Philip, and five grandchildren.
