GARFINKLE--Norton. Norton Garfinkle, beloved husband, father, grandfather, mentor, professor, entrepreneur, author and philanthropist. A lifelong New Yorker born in the Bronx to parents Jacob and Zeena, Norton passed away on March 20, 2025 at age 94 in the townhouse he designed on the Upper East Side. Phi Betta Kappa graduate with honors at Columbia University. Graduate work at Columbia and Princeton. Taught Economics and History as one of the youngest professors ever at Amherst College. Edited The Journal of Economic History and "Lincoln and the Coming of the Civil War." Entrepreneur across six decades. Pioneer in the field of market research as founder of Brand Rating Research. His company Cambridge Parallel Processing detected land mines for the US and foreign governments and supplied search engine systems to Reuters. Oral Research Laboratories developed Plax, the first pre-brushing dental rinse. Electronic Retailing Systems provided self-checkout systems to supermarkets. Lamaze Institute for Family Education published Lamaze Parent magazine. Norton is the author of "The American Dream vs. The Gospel of Wealth: The Fight for a Productive Middle-Class Economy." With Harold Holzer, the author of "A Just and Generous Nation: Abraham Lincoln and the Fight for American Opportunity." With Daniel Yankelovich, the editor of "Uniting America: Restoring the Vital Center to American Democracy." Throughout his life Norton contributed his time and talent in service of a better, more just world. Chairman of National Hospice Foundation, New York Landmarks Conservancy and Finance Committee of Harlem School of the Arts. Board member of CUNY Macaulay Honors College and Public Agenda. Norton is survived by five children, eight grandchildren and his wife of a half century, Sally Minard. A celebration of Norton's life will be held at Frank E. Campbell, April 24, 2025 at 11am, 1076 Madison Ave.
