OLIVE FREUD Obituary

FREUD--Olive, Relentless advocate for a livable New York, founder of the Committee for Environmentally Sound Development, died peacefully on July 8, 2025, at her beloved Lake Hopatcong home. After careers as a computer engineer and mathematics teacher at LaGuardia HS, Olive led decades-long fights against mega development projects in Manhattan. Among her victories were a 1990s suit against Donald Trump's Riverside South, a 2010 suit against Lincoln Center to reopen Damrosch Park, and a 2020 zoning challenge that led a judge to order 20 floors removed from 200 Amsterdam. Born in 1927 to Socialist organizers, raised on a communal family farm outside of Albany and in the Bronx, graduated from Hunter College, settled with husband, Edgar, on the Upper West Side. She traveled widely, held fierce, unwavering views on nuclear disarmament and environmental justice, and was a "force." Survived by daughter, Salome Freud (Charlie Olson); daughter-in-law Judith Pincus; and grandsons, Matthew and Joshua Freud; predeceased by husband, and son, Conan.

Condolences to her family on this sad news. I worked with Olive for nuclear disarmament and was always impressed with her wisdom and energy.
