PATRICIA CLOHERTY Obituary

CLOHERTY--Patricia M., a resident of Coconut Grove, FL and formerly Garrison, NY, entered into rest Friday, September 23, 2022 at her home. She was 80 years old. She was born on July 2,1942 in San Francisco, CA to the late John Cloherty and Doris Dawson Cloherty. Pat was raised in the town of Pollock Pines, CA, where she grew up with her siblings Michael Cloherty, Margaret Cloherty Steinman (deceased) and Judith Cloherty Mendel. Pat received a B.A. from the San Francisco College for Women and an M.A. and M.I.A. from Columbia University. While at Columbia, she lived at International House in New York City, post-graduate housing for scholars from around the world to live together and develop global leadership skills in an atmosphere of peace and mutual understanding. Pat was Chairman and CEO of Delta Private Equity Partners, LLC and manager of the U.S. Russia Investment Fund and Delta Russia Fund, L.P., two venture capital funds with over $500 million invested in 55 Russian companies. She was also a senior advisor to UFG Private Equity, partner firm to Delta Private Equity. Pat was former Co-Chairman, President and General Partner of Apax Partners, Inc. (formerly Patricof & Co. Ventures, Inc.), a multibillion-dollar private equity company. She was also a past President and Chairman of the National Venture Capital Association of the United States. From 1977 to 1978, Pat was Deputy Administrator, U.S. Small Business Administration. In 1981, Pat was the founding President of the Committee of 200, a prestigious organization of the country's leading women entrepreneurs and corporate executives. In 1991, the White House appointed her chairman of an Investment Advisory Council to revamp the Small Business Investment Company program of the U.S. Small Business Administration. Pat holds various directorships and is a former Trustee of Columbia University, a Trustee for Life of International House, and Trustee Emeritus of Columbia University's Teachers College. She is a member of The Rockefeller University Council and the Council on Foreign Relations. In April 2009, she was elected to the Board of Directors of NYSE Euronext (New York Stock Exchange). Pat grew up in a simple country environment and never forgot where she came from. In speeches to lofty business gatherings, she often reminisced about picking pears and cooking for loggers in the Sierra Nevada mountains. She served in the Peace Corps in Brazil from 1963 to 1965 and decades later, still entertained people with stories about castrating pigs with local farmers. One of Pat's greatest gifts was the ability to connect naturally with others, from cab drivers to hotel staff, from CEOs of multi-million-dollar corporations to government cabinet members. She had a diverse collection of friends of all ages from around the world. Pat enjoyed trips to the casinos (the slot machines being good arm exercise, she always said). She treasured her time spent with friends and chosen family in her country house in Garrison, NY. She was a fierce Scrabble competitor. She enjoyed the arts and was a big supporter of the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival. Memorial services are to be held on October 14, 2022, 10:30am at St. Philip's Church in the Highlands, Garrison, NY. Memorial Donations in Pat's name may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, 10901 Old Cutler Rd., Coral Gables, FL 33156.

I just lost a dear friend and mentor who has inspired me so much all these years. To our professional life, Pat was my advisor and guiding light as we build our EdTech, and women focused FinTech; Whenever I needed a direction, she was there, always strong, always wise. To our daughter, she was the caring auntie Pat who remembered her birthday, adored her drawings, and wrote her school reference letters. I was deeply saddened to have missed a call from Pat just a day before her passing but took comfort that we talked in the prior week. Pat has lived a legendary life with so many great friends who loved her. Her legacy will live on in our memories and continue to inspire us.

I first knew Pat at International House in nyc. Later on we were roommates for years at 380 Riverside Drive. She was a ray of sunshine to all who knew her. I am heartbroken over her passing but grateful that I knew her many years ago. Lee Harper Vason

The Committee of 200 invited me to join the organization when Patricia was president. I was on pins and needles at my first C200 meeting, but all that changed when I bumped into her in the ladies room. She introduced herself, I told her I was a nervous new member, and she went out of her way on that day and many others to make me feel at home. Though we haven't corresponded in many years, I still remember that moment and all others with Patricia. She was truly one-of-a-kind!

I am so sorry to learn of Pat´s passing but am pleased but hardly surprised to learn that her life since I last saw her in 1968 was so productive. I was President of the Columbia University Student Chapter of the Society for International Development from 1966 to 1968. Pat was our secretary and was a tremendous contributor to the chapter´s activities and motivator for me and others involved with our programs. She was a great joy to work with and a wonderful person. My condolences to her family and friends. I will always cherish her friendship and our time together.

This has been a week of loss for me of people who made a strong difference in my trajectory at a time when their guidance mattered most. Pat Cloherty threw a lifeline to me during my short stay at SBA and then kept in touch for many years. As much as any others, she showed me the value of mentorship, and I´d like to think I was a decent student. May her memory always be for a blessing.

Pat influenced me in many ways. I was fortunate enough to be her friend and Peace Corps colleague for it was in Brazil where her light became brighter and brighter. She was witty, fun, sincere and most of all, intelligent. Her many contributions to many organizations will long influence the world.
