Paul Tichler Obituary

Paul Robert ("Bob") Tichler, longtime resident of Patchogue, New York, who spent his retirement years on Manhattan's Upper West Side, died on Friday, June 3, 2022, after a brief illness. He was 90 years old.

Born in Brooklyn in 1931, he attended Brooklyn Technical High School, followed by City College of New York and Columbia University, where he received a master's degree in chemical engineering. After serving in the Army, he spent most of his career at Brookhaven National Laboratory, working in the Reactor Division as a nuclear engineer until his retirement.

A jogger and tennis player in his younger days, Bob had a lifelong interest in learning and research, which he channeled in his retirement into investing, cooking experiments, and finding the best version of whatever gadget or home appliance caught his attention. He enjoyed reading books, listening to classical and jazz music, and watching classic movies. Among his favorites were the author John le Carré, composer Johann Sebastian Bach, and director Stanley Kubrick. He was also interested in the history and legacy of the World War II Manhattan Project and Los Alamos Laboratory director J. Robert Oppenheimer.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Joyce Levenson Tichler; sister Rosemarie Tichler and her spouse Ellen Feinstein; son Carl Tichler and his wife Suzanne Perry; son Jonathan Tichler and his husband Arturo Padilla; grandchildren Andrew and Aleksi Tichler; and nephew Theodore Feinstein. He was preceded in death by his brother Harvey Tichler in 2021.

I worked with Paul (Bob) at BNL for many years. I always enjoyed his consistently upbeat attitude and his engineering knowledge. He always took the time to help me when things got complicated. I considered Paul my closest colleague and enjoyed our daily interactions. I wish Joyce and the Tichler Family peace. Paul - I will miss you.
