Peggy Holmes Obituary

Peggy Jean Holmes, 53 of Springfield passed away into eternal life on the afternoon of 19 February from complications of leukemia. Her husband and close family were at her side as she passed peacefully. Peggy was born September 20, 1962 in Grants Pass, Oregon to Paul and Loretta Phillips. Her family moved to Springfield, Oregon where she attended Springfield Jr. High and later graduated from Thurston High School in 1980. Peggy was active in Church activities at an early age and eventually teaching Kids Club and Sunday School for kids. After briefly attending Eastern Oregon State University in La Grande, Oregon she embarked on a career in retail sales at Emporium and Meir and Franks. Later Peggy became manager of The Hub in Hood River, Oregon and later in Stanwood, Washington. Peggy came home and worked Part time seasonal work for Lane County as a Flagger and for Harry and David's during the holidays. Most recently She had worked at Ben Franklin Crafts for nearly 20 years before taking a new job at Hobby Lobby. Peggy was diagnosed with leukemia on 14th of October last year.

Peggy met her husband Leonard Holmes when he walked into Bethel Assembly of God (now City of Destiny) on Centennial in Springfield in July of 1993 and they married on August 19th, 1994. Peggy loved arts and crafts and more than occasionally brought craft samples home from work. She had a soft spot for animals and wasn't shy about bringing home abandon kittens she found while flagging for the County. She loved her puppies the most of all. She enjoyed road trips with Leonard, visiting Crater Lake, the Oregon Caves and camping with her step children Kathlene and Michael. Became an Army wife while Leonard served in the Army Reserves and his multiple deployments to Iraq. She took great pleasure in spoiling her five grandsons. But her real passion was serving the Lord and others. Peggy strongly believed in supporting missions. She adopted several children by sponsoring them through Children International. Leonard and Peggy started attending Jasper Assembly of God where she put her crafting talents to work for Vacation Bible School. She filled in as youth leader for teens when needed.

Peggy is preceded into eternity by her mother Loretta Phillips. She is survived by her father Paul Phillips, step mother and friend Gerry Roe, her husband Leonard Holmes all of Springfield; her brother Greg Phillips of Eugene; her step daughter Kathlene Barnhart of Silverdale, Washington, step son Michael Holmes of Springfield; her nephew Ben Phillips of Springfield; five grandsons; her Cairn Terrier Albus and Westie/Jack Russel Bonnie.

Memorial service will be held at New Life Church at 2080 Nth. 19th Street in Springfield, Oregon on Saturday March 5th at 1pm. It has been asked that that in lieu of flowers that you please donate to the Eugene Mission. It is also requested that everyone take the time to think about being tested for becoming a bone marrow donor at bethematch.org.

I didn't realize this would be Peggy's Birthday. I just found this memorial written about her. Peggy was a friend and I remember she loved to serve the Lord, and others. I've missed her over these years. I especially remember the times we went to the beach to shop. She was a beautiful friend. Someday we will all be together again. May she rest in peace.

What a beautiful service to celebrate such a wonderful life. Thank you Leonard, Paul, Gerry and family. I know Peggy would have loved every moment (even though there wasn't a hat with horns!) Miss you Peggy, though I know you're enjoying your new adventure.

Peggy was such a pivotal person for our family while we were at Bethel Assembly of God. The Sunday morning I got the call my mother had passed away in Myrtle Point and could I come, I called Peggy to see if I could bring my kids to her. Of course she said "Yes!" then when I dropped them off she hugged me and pressed a "little something" into my hand to help with gas or whatever! Ever giving, ever loving, always willing to help, she guided my daughter through her teen years and helped my son in many ways. Rest in Peace, Peggy. May peace be your portion Leonard, Paul, Greg, Ben and all the kids, grandkids and many friends who will never forget you!
