PETER GOULANDRIS

GOULANDRIS--Peter George. Passed away Sunday, 19th June 2022 surrounded by his family. Born in London, UK on 1st June 1929, son of Nora Mitchell and George P. Goulandris. During the Second World War, his mother's home was hit by German bombing but he and his aunts and grandmother were fortunate to survive. He was then evacuated to the countryside until the end of the war. Peter entered the Merchant Marine at age sixteen and after achieving his First Mate license went to McGill University in Canada before joining the shipping business. In 1955, he married Kathryn Saunders. Following the birth of his two daughters, Chryssi in 1958 and Tyna in 1959, the family moved to London in 1962. In 1964, their son George Peter was born, followed in 1966 by Basil Peter. Peter was a founding member of Capeside Steamship Company in London in 1945 and continued as an executive and consultant for over sixty years. Well known in the London Broking community in the 1970s; in later years, he took a more global portfolio within the parent organization. In 1970, he purchased Hesmond's Stud where he became happily involved in horse breeding and racing. Winning Classics and Group One Races with Formidable and gaining a second place in the Derby with Shoemaker was complimented by an innovative and thoughtful breeding programme producing such important brood-mares as Triple First and Claxon. He also was active in several shipping associations, a director of the American Bureau of Shipping and a member of The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers for fifty years. He was an opera lover and Friend of Covent Garden, a member of Queen's, and widely involved in the London Greek arts and cultural communities. In 1975, he became a member of the Lyford Cay Club, serving as Chairman from 1996 to 2000. He was also a director and subsequently Honorary Director of the Lyford Cay Foundations. Other interests included boating, travel, golf and bridge. He made many friends throughout his career who enjoyed his ready sense of humor and lively spirit. He was predeceased by his son, George Peter and survived by his wife Kathryn with whom he was married for 66 years, his daughters Chryssi and Tyna and son Basil and ten grandchildren.
