PETER MODEL Obituary

MODEL--Professor Peter,

84, died on Friday, June 9, 2017 after a brief period of declining health. He came to New York at age nine with his parents, Jane and Leo, the family having left Germany after Hitler's rise to power, when he was three. He studied economics at Cornell and Stanford, and served in the United States army as a first lieutenant after graduation. Peter began his career in his father's investment banking business, and then left after a few years to follow his interest in science (inspired by his childhood chemistry set). After obtaining a PhD in biochemistry from Columbia, he joined Dr. Norton Zinder's lab at The Rockefeller University, in time becoming a full professor. Peter was talented, perceptive and humane, and he was known as an independent thinker who asked great questions. He will be missed by his wife, Marjorie Russel, his children, Paul and Sascha, his brother, Allen, his grandchildren, Anna, Corey, Leo and Nica, and many other relatives, friends and colleagues. All who knew him will remember that he lived a good life. In lieu of flowers, contributions to The Rockefeller University or SelfHelp Community Services would be welcome.
