RALPH EHRENPREIS Obituary

EHRENPREIS--Ralph. June 9, 1942 - October 18, 2014 Ralph Ehrenpreis wrote a first draft of his obituary over the years, but often quipped that he wanted it to be published many years in the future, if at all. Ralph was born in Memphis, Tennessee to Irv and Bess Ehrenpreis and shortly thereafter moved to Oak Park, MI, a suburb of Detroit, where he grew up with his only sister, Tobi. When he was ten, his father passed away and there began his everlasting quest to avoid his own death. He went to University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he graduated in 1963. Thereafter, he moved to California to marry Sandra Jackson and to attend Stanford Law School, where he received his Juris Doctor in 1967. After moving to Los Angeles to work for a large law firm, he quickly found his niche by establishing an immigration law practice more than 40 years ago, which continues to be one of the most successful such firms in the country. His passion for his work was only surpassed by his love of jazz, theater, film, exercise, literature, and his family. Over the years he amassed a remarkable and vast collection of jazz recordings. He played his music loud, scrutinizing every word of the liner notes, had an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of the music and artists, and was a scholar of all things jazz. He was a voracious reader with his home filled with shelves of books from decades of interests. Although he will be remembered for his tireless commitment to his law practice, most will remember a man with an unsurpassed sense of humor, wry and quick wit, and sarcasm. As much as he loved making others laugh, he loved making himself laugh even more. Beneath his irreverence was a man who loved his friends, made strangers smile, and made time every day of his life to be there for his closest family. So many people loved and admired his insatiable curiosity, depth of interests, sheer intellect, and charisma and warmth. He was deeply committed to his wife of eighteen years, Jennifer Kaufman, his three children, Ira, Jeff, and Jason, his daughters-in-law, Ellen and Brooke, his step-children Darian and Ben, and his three grandchildren, Lindsay, Ashley, and Zachary. In the ultimate irony, his death was tragic like that of his father and so many of the jazz figures who were his heroes. May your family thrive in celebration of your memory to know how many dreams you empowered by knocking down the divisions of borders to allow talent and art to flow in full freedom in fair measure to succeed or fail on equal playing field of the American Dream through doors opened by the dedication of your work.

Thank you for keeping the Dream world-class during an otherwise suffocating time of xenophobic post 9-11 political fog. You reached an immeasurable amount of people impacted directly and indirectly by those who's art, entertainment, science, technology, innovation and overall enrichment of this culture in which the best of the rest of the world can make it here on time because you were the best at what you do. Thank you.

Ralph helped me on a life changing journey that enabled me live in the USA after a devastating loss in the UK. I will always be in his debt for his friendly, sound advice and that of his staff too. God Bless you Ralph - you made a major difference in life.

You were my champion, Mr. Ralph Ehrenpreis. I would not have a career in animation here in the US had it not for your brilliance. Sorry I only found out before Christmas. May you rest in eternal peace.

I am flabbergasted and so very very sad. I met Ralph as we ran at the track at Beverly Hills High School in the early 80s; What a wit! And what wonderful curiosity. I was so happy to have Ralph as a friend and that I was often his ear when he needed to vent. I believe we 'got' each other, and I always was sad that our friendship waned. When I learned today that he died, I was simply appalled. SUCH a loss. Ira, Jeff & Jason--he loved and admired all of you so much and you are indeed fortunate to be his kids. Jennifer! I was at your wedding and know how enamored he was. Please know you are in my thoughts and I share at least a modicum of your sadness. Wendy Tucker

I have just today learned of Ralph's passing, oddly on the Yarzheit of my own husband, Dennis Rosoff, one of his great buddies. I am stunned and saddened by this news...HOWEVER, I am happy that he and Dennis can be reunited and certainly will elicit laughter together!!!

Ralph touched many lives through his work in ways which brought positive and meaningful results for his clients. Above all he cared about those individuals that he represented as was evident in every individual meeting and conversation.

I am so saddened to hear about the passing of Ralph Ehrenpreis. Over the years he has provided great legal service to a number of my personal referrals to him. A pleasure to talk with on the phone, we always talked about jazz, his family and of mutual friends. I hadn't spoken to Ralph in probably 5 years but just last Thursday, October 23, I referred a potential foreign teacher to him who was looking for a music teaching position at my school, not yet knowing about his death. That night my husband and I were talking about my "day", my interview, and at length about Ralph. Then the next evening my husband handed me his obituary in the LA Times! I was in shock to hear this news. I could not sleep that night because of it and stayed up to do a crossword puzzle (I am a crossword puzzle maven). So I am doing this crossword puzzle and, in all my CP years I have never had this word appear in one of my puzzles before:.... "RALPH"!!! Then I could not sleep for the rest of the night. To me this was a sign from the heavens that Ralph is already out there somewhere in the ether continuing to do good works while humming jazz licks.

Ralph was one of those people I had deemed eternal and immortal!! I have known Ralph for decades since the family attended my music school Westwood Yamaha Music School-now Cornerstone Music Conservatory-with their son Ira. What a wonderful and personable lawyer he was and such fun to talk to. I do not know what caused his death but I hope he did not suffer very long. He has definitely left us too soon and I will miss him very much. My heart goes out to his family. He will not be forgotten.

Whenever I worked with Ralph on behalf of a client, it was always a conversation filled with discussion of music, life and eventually, the client. What a wonderful man and how lucky I was to have worked with him, albeit long distance. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and loved ones.

As I have said before, Ralph was a legend in his own lifetime. Everyone has stories - some good, some bad, but none indifferent, and that is the mark of an impactful life. It was not by chance that at his office Ralph surrounded himself by extraordinary and talented people, and I was fortunate enough to get to know them. A dysfunctional family of characters, indeed. Blessed was I.

October 22, 2014

As Ralph's next-door office neighbor for the last twelve years, I took pleasure every day from my encounters with Ralph, his wit and sly humor, his love of literature, and his vivid personality. My colleagues and I share the family's grief and send our condolences.

I got to know Ralph over the years as he was a frequent guest at the restaurant that I work for. He was known by the entire staff as a kind, generous and lovely patron. Even in speaking with him over the phone you could tell that he always had a smile on his face. My thoughts are with Jason, Jennifer and the entire family. He will be missed.

As a former "Ehrenpreiser" my stories are probably a bit more irreverent than the average person's, but I thank Ralph for the chance he took on me, the impact he had on my life, and the support he gave on my journey to becoming an attorney. Thanks Ralph.
