Ralph O'Connell Obituary

O'Connell -- Ralph A. Saint David's School mourns the passing on December 21, 2021 of Dr. Ralph A. "Tony" O'Connell, who served on the Saint David's Board of Trustees during the late 1970s through the early 1980s.

Tony is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jane Burke O'Connell, his daughter Ellen (Nursery '79), son John (Class of '85), sister Anne, and his large extended family. His son Ralph Eugene O'Connell III (Class of '78) predeceased him in 2017.

Just like the many members of the O'Connell and Burke families who have served in various capacities at Saint David's throughout the years, Tony embodied the essence of the school's mission: ut viri boni sint – that they be good men. Through the work he did as a committed steward of the Saint David's board and numerous other institutions with which he was involved, Tony made a true impact on the lives of many. The Saint David's community is deeply grateful for his service. May Tony rest in peace.

I am a good friend of Ralph's son John, who always spoke highly of his Dad. I once met Ralph at Kenyon College, where we had a wonderful conservation about psychiatry. He will be missed as a scientist, doctor, friend and parent.

Just learned today 1/07 of Tony's passing. He was a college roommate for 2 years and a great friend. He actually saved my life in sophomore year and although we had not seen or talked to each other in many years, our friendship remained as great as ever. God bless this great man!

Toy O´Connell was my teacher, advisor, and someone I aspired to be in my professional life. I´m sorry to hear he´s gone. I hope his family has good memories of better days, as I do.
