RENATA HOROWITZ Obituary

HOROWITZ--Renata Gross,

The Robin Hood Foundation joins the extended Horowitz, Gross and Epstein families in mourning the loss of 21-year-old Renata Gross Horowitz. Renata was the step-daughter of our beloved colleague and friend, Suzi Epstein. Renata spent a summer working at Robin Hood and we remember her as the brightest light, with the most facile mind and the most committed spirit. "Renata" means born again and through her death she gives life to others. She is permanently in our hearts and our thoughts. The Robin Hood community will ensure that our work and lives are a fitting tribute to her legacy. The staff and board of Robin Hood

On behalf of all of us at the Logan Center at the University of Chicago, I want to offer my deepest sympathy. We were very fortunate that one of the places that Renata choose to lend her considerable talents was the Logan Center for the Arts. As an artist and student intern, Renata's exceptional ability to accomplish almost any task with warmth and creativity, from supporting the creation of a documentary on Contempo to welcoming artist from Beijing, contributed greatly to artistic community at the Logan Center and throughout the University. She was a wonderful artist and a taught me a great deal with a passion for art that was infectious. I still miss having her spend time in my office - not only because she was exceptional at all she did, but also because her warm personality made it a joy to come to work. Our thoughts are with you and your entire family -- Renata will be remembered fondly by all of us.

Warmly.

I had the good fortune of knowing Renata as a student at the University of Chicago, and of being one of her instructors in Barcelona. She was a paragon of gumption and an exemplar of effortless cool. She possessed a refined aesthetic sensibility, and the world is much poorer for having lost the art she was meant to create. I extend my deepest sympathies to her family and loved ones.

April 11, 2016

To family and friends of Renata--she took two of my classes at University of Chicago (MOvies & Madness and "Reading Madness" in the fall of 2015). She lit up the classroom with her intelligence, humor, and voracious curiosity. Her performance (with Sophia Huang) of Charlotte Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper" last December was a small masterpiece. Such a brilliant spirit, I find it impossible to accept that she is gone, and I will remember her as one of those students who makes the life of a teacher worthwhile. My deepest sympathy, Tom Mitchell, Professor of English at U of Chicago PS I am attaching some photos of her installation-performance from last December.

I had the district pleasure of working with Renata at the Logan Center at U of C -- Amie I met you briefly when you came to visit a couple of years ago now. From the first time I met her during an interview I was impressed and astonished by her brilliance, personality, character, and essence.
