Dick Bernstein was a wonderful teacher and scholar. I first had a course with him as a sophomore at Yale and his teaching is the reason that I went on to study and teach philosophy, and especially pragmatism. It is hard to put in words his enthusiasm, generosity and search for clarity and justice in philosophy. Anyone who studied with him, either in class or out, will testify to how special he was.
