RICHARD FRIEDMAN Obituary

FRIEDMAN--Richard C., MD. The American Academy of Psychodynamic Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis mourns the loss of our esteemed Editor of Psychodynamic Psychiatry, formerly The Journal of the American Academy of Psychodynamic Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis, who passed away this week. He was a charismatic teacher, gifted clinician, and challenging, brilliant author. His work on sex and gender, hormones and behavior, and psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychiatry was ground- breaking. Our deepest sympathies to his family. Always missed and never forgotten...my brother Richard was always a larger than life presence in my life. After all, he was 4 1/2 yrs. older from my start. He had many virtues. I will only share one here. His will. Towards the end of his life Rick came down with shingles...not once but twice. He was in agonizing pain and applied prescription pain patches constantly. I think that they were fentanyl . At a certain point he felt he was becoming addicted to the pain meds...so he just ripped off the patches and stopped taking the pain relief meds. He continued to do his practice and work. He never complained. That was Rick.

I had the fortune to work with Rick many years ago early in my career. He was a brilliant and caring boss; I learned so much from him. He was a physician from "the old school", in the best possible sense. I'll never forget the long note he wrote to me when my father was dying- deeply compassionate. I then went on to work for and now with Sue, and still do. So I know first hand what a committed couple they were. I wish Sue and the family deep condolences. May his memory be a blessing.

I did not know Dr. Friedman personally, but one can have a sense of the quality of a man not only through his extraordinary reputation but through knowing the people who loved him, and having known for many years my warm and wonderful colleague, his wife, Sue, I know what a truly fine person he must have been. I send my deepest condolences to Sue, her son and daughter-in-law, and her grandchildren.

Rick was a wonderful brother and mentor...he was compassionate and displayed great courage ...In my last conversation with him he said: "at this point in my life all I want to do is to help people." He leaves a great legacy in his wife, son, daughter in law and grandchildren as well as his many past students.

It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of our dear and old friend Rick Friedman. He was everything enumerated in the obituary, and then some. Warm, intellectual in the best sense of that word, and completely dedicated to his profession. It was an
honor to be his friend and he will be greatly missed by all who had a connection with him.
