Rarely have the qualities of a great scientist, a skilled and compassionate physician, an inspiring teacher and mentor, and a great friend, been harmonized in one man. Dick Hays is that man and he will remain an inspiration to all of us.

Dick Hays was my colleague, mentor and friend. He was a consummate physician, sterling person, and a gentleman of the old school. It was a privilege to have known him. I mourn his loss, but I celebrate his life well-lived. Christos and I extend our deepest sympathy to Susan and his family.

Dear friends and colleagues of my father, Thank you so much for all your beautiful notes. I have been printing them out for my mother and we have been enjoying the photos and memories so much. We are planning a memorial service to celebrate his life on Thursday, Jan. 3, at 4 pm at Temple Shalom, in Greenwich, Conn. We would be honored to have you attend. All our love, Laurie

I knew Dick in many guises: committed scientist, dedicated teacher, supportive colleague, and persistent promoter of what he thought was best for Einstein. We should all aspire to match his example.

I've know Dick since the early 1960s when we both began to study the action of vasopressin. Over the years I've seen him excel as a scientist and real mensch. My condolences to his family and close friends.

Dear Mrs. Hays, we wouldn't be the doctors we are today without the mentorship of Dr. Hays. Our sorrow is only matched by our love for him.

Dear Susan,
The constant theme of kindness, good humor, and thoughtfulness that run through the entries in this guest book tell Dick's story. Every interaction with him included a nourishing dose of each one of those traits. I will remember especially fondly the poems he would pen on special occasions - good for laughs and tears and always leaving the audience better off.
A great man has passed but he leaves a wonderful legacy in his family, friends, and profession.

Dear Susan,
I want to express my sadness on hearing of Dick's passing. He was a giant in our field. But more importantly, he was one of the finest human beings I have had the pleasure of knowing in science and medicine. His caring and easy manner with young or old allowed for his durable wisdom to mold generations of nephrologists.
My deepest sympathies to you and your family,
Denny Ausiello

Dear Susan
My colleagues and I at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston were all deeply saddened to hear of the loss of your husband and our long time friend. He was a pioneer in the field of of kidney function, and his groundbreaking work on the cellular biology of vasopressin action in particular continues to inspire our research directions as we move forward. I particularly remember Dick being very kind and encouraging to junior faculty members in my group as they took their first steps towards scientific independence. I saw him frequently in recent years both up in Maine at the MDIBL as well as at his beloved Salt and Water Club meetings that are held in New York each Spring. His continued thoughtful comments and enthusiasm were an inspiration to us all.
He will not be forgotten and we will miss him greatly.

Dear Sue and family,
Jean and I are very sad to hear of Dick's passing. He was a central figure in the history of the MDIBL, and a very kind mentor and friend to me. His presence will be missed in future summers in Salisbury Cove.

Dear Susan, For someone I have never met you have found a place in my heart. Your husband shared such amazing kindness and determination for my recovery from Gullian Barre'. His assistance made such difference for my successful care. I am sad that I never got the chance to meet such an amazing person. Anne, my sister-in-law shares many wonderful stories with me about Dr Hays. She loved him so very much.
My prayers are with you and your family. With much regret I missed meeting him in person, but I will always live with the memory of a certain powerful doctor in Boston saying to me: "Now how do you know this Dr. Hays?" I may not have known Dr. hays like others did. But he is still, and was four years ago my guardian angel.
