RICHARD LEVINE Obituary

LEVINE--Dr. Richard U. Dr. Richard U. Levine, a member of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at NewYork-Presbyterian/ Columbia University Irving Medical Center for more than 50 years and who advanced women's health in New York City and throughout the country, died April 12 in a bicycling accident. He was 78. Dr. Levine was born in the Bronx, New York, in 1941 to Vivian and Herman Levine, an immigrant from Minsk, Russia, who owned a drugstore in New York City's Knickerbocker Hotel in the 1930s. They later moved to New Jersey where Richard attended Teaneck High School. He received his undergraduate degree from Tufts University in 1962 and his M.D., on a full scholarship, from Cornell University Medical College in 1966. He was an intern in medicine at Bellevue Hospital, New York. After his medical residency at Columbia University, Levine served in the Army as a physician stationed in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey and later in San Antonio, Texas. When he left the service, he had achieved the rank of major. Except for fellowships at the Karolinska Institute, in Sweden, and the Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center, his professional career, since 1974, was spent at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. "Growing up, whenever we were with mom and dad in public, invariably, we would be approached by parents who introduced us to their children or grandchildren who dad had delivered as babies," son Daniel Levine said. "They always told us how much they appreciated Dad's time, care and amazing attentiveness." Dr. Levine was happiest helping patients and spending time with his family at his farm in Millbrook, New York, where he cultivated fruit and vegetables - and even bred Koi fish. He took pleasure in sharing his bounty with friends and family, delivering bumper crops of tomatoes, zucchini, corn and more. Son Peter Levine remembered: "Dad's ideal day started at the farm with planting corn in his garden, digging a pond at noon, catching a quick snooze and then enjoying a dinner of his own produce and homemade ice cream with our mom, Ellen." Dr. Levine filled numerous hospital, academic and professional positions, including president of Columbia Presbyterian's Society of Practitioners, fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was a member of the New York Obstetrical Society since 1978 and was elected its president in 2002. Among Dr. Levine's contributions to the department of obstetrics and gynecology were the creation of chair positions in both his and his wife Ellen's name. Ellen Levine was the long-serving editor-in-chief of Good Housekeeping and later editorial director of Hearst Magazines. Together, the couple worked on the charitable board of the New York Restoration Project, Bette Midler's effort to revitalize parks in all boroughs of New York City. Additionally, Dr. Levine was an active alumni of Tufts University, and in 2018, participated in dedicating the newly renovated Levine Research and Learning Center in the Tisch Library. In the last weeks of his life during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Levine organized donations of personal protective equipment for frontline hospital workers. He is survived by wife Ellen; sons Daniel (Kathleen Kaiser Levine) and Peter (Naria Halliwell) and grandchildren Lucas, Jacob, Talia, Sofie and Sasha, and loving extended family members.

I was a patient of Dr. Levine´s in the mid 90´s. He was the most compassionate and charming doctor I had ever encountered. He loved talking about my career on Broadway with me and he did everything he could to guide me as I began my very unsettling path of infertility treatment. My heartfelt and deep condolences to his family and colleagues at the tragic loss of such a wonderful man. He was a very special indeed, and I am sure he is greatly missed by all who had the good fortune to know him.

Dr, Levine delivered my daughter in 1984. My pregnancy was a troubled one, yet he persevered, and I delivered my daughter 2 months early weighing slightly less than 4 1/2lbs. She is now 38 and 5'8" - how's that for a preemie? Thank you, Dr, Levine and may you forever be remembered as the wonderful and dedicated doctor and humanitarian that you were.

I'm very sorry to hear about the passing of Dr. Levine. He was truly an amazing doctor, and extremely kind and compassionate. After not seeing him for some time because of my residence on Long Island, he helped me last year address a health concern at a time when I didn't know who to turn to. I've always felt secure knowing he was just a phone call or a train ride away. I will always be grateful for his guidance and support as my physician. My deepest condolences to his family.

Dr. Levine was my doctor for 34 years. I feel so privileged to have had such a knowledgeable, and kind doctor in my life. I always felt that I was given the best of care, whether it was at a routine visit or when he brought my daughter into the world, 33 years ago. She went on to become a patient of his, as well. Dr Levine made us feel like our lives mattered to him, and for that I will be forever grateful. He was so proud of his lovely family. Please know that my heart goes out to you, Ellen, and your children and grandchildren. I will miss him sorely and know that he can never be replaced.

I opened my mail late last night and read the awful news about Dr. Levine. I knew he was retiring and assumed the envelope from his office had something to do with that. Even in a time of seeming apocalypse his death has shaken me to my corein part because he has been part of my life since the mid-70s, saved my life I should say, and in part because over that period of time we became something more than doctor/patient.

After I moved to DC in 1979 I commuted to New York to see him and somehow it was always reassuring and fun. Last fall, when I was unable to get to the city to be treated by him, he got on the phone with me and every resident/attending/big shot doc who needed to know my history. He emailed the day before he died just to check up on me. It says everything about him that he showed up at my most recent book party the day his brother die and apologized for leaving early.

Yours in gratitude and mourning,
Jane Leavy

I was so sadden to hear about the passing of Dr. Levine. He was my doctor when I lived in the city and continued as my doctor, even though I now live upstate. He was an outstanding physician as well as a caring, compassionate human being. He truly cared about the well being of his patients. My heartfelt condolence to his family and friends. You now have an amazing guardian angel watching over you. Rest in peace Dr. Levine. You will be missed. God Bless!

Dick Levine's death was a terrible shock to me and my family. He was one of the most vital, optimistic, and energetic people I have ever known; constantly engaged, whether in his practice or on the farm. A lover of Nature, pick-up trucks, and with Ellen, a collector of art, he was one of the most generous friends I have ever had. I remain grateful for his company and his friendship. The organization I started 25years ago, NYRP, would not have been the same without the loving attention Dick and Ellen lavished on us during those first difficult years. My family and I and our NYRP family send our profound condolences to his surviving family.

I was so saddened to learn about Dr. Levine's passing. I became his patient when I was 26 and will be turning 70 in May. His care and compassion were extraordinary. When confronted with several medical challenges, the first call I made for referrals was to Dr. Levine. His calm, wisdom and concern made me and all his patients feel that they truly mattered. He will be sorely missed. May his memory be for a blessing.
