RICHARD MARKS Obituary

MARKS--Richard M., M.D.,

aged 80, died peacefully at home on January 14, 2016, surrounded by family. Richard will be especially missed by his wife, Judith, his four children, Andrew, Gigi, Elisabeth and Matthew, seven grandchildren, innumerable close family members and longtime friends. Richard was a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst in New York City, where he practiced for more than five decades. Richard grew up in Brooklyn and graduated from Midwood High School. He went to Columbia University and then onto SUNY Downstate College of Medicine, graduating in 1961. A lifetime New Yorker, Richard was a psychiatrist in the Air Force, based in Texas, before returning to New York City to finish his training at Albert Einstein Medical Center in the Bronx and the New York Psychoanalytic Institute. An Attending Clinical Professor in the department of Psychiatry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Assistant Attending Psychiatrist at Montefiore Medical Center and senior supervisor in the Consult Liaison Service at Montefiore Medical Center, Richard co-authored "Undertreatment of Medical Inpatients with Narcotic Analgesics," in the Annals of Internal Medicine, an influential article that has been cited more than 1,000 times in academic papers. Richard was an avid reader of history and The New York Times, a devotee of opera, classical music, and art. Richard loved traveling with his wife-together, they visited 43 countries. More than anything, he loved spending time with his family. He will be deeply missed by all of us.

Art and I were deeply saddened to read about RiCard,s death today. We have many memories of him. Arth remembers their days at Brooklyn State Hospital. I remember several nice weekends in the ski house in Stephentown. Richard showed me where to park when I first went to Montefiore to work. We send our condolences to the family.

I'm very sad to hear about Richard's passing, which I learned about yesterday from my former colleagues at Montefiore. I worked with Richard in the early 1990s and remember him as a very special man. Was so happy when he spotted me on a packed M86 bus a couple of years ago and we got to talk again. My condolences to his family
