ROBERT GERSTEN Obituary

GERSTEN--Robert. Died peacefully on October 18th, 2019, in his 100th year, surrounded by his loving family. Bobby lived every day to the fullest with incredible optimism, energy and enthusiasm through his last days. Bobby committed each day to hard work, achievement, physical activity and fun. He dedicated his life to the education and development of young people, inspiring them through his example and encouraging them to be their best selves. "Bobby G" was the legendary director of Brant Lake Camp where he influenced the lives of thousands of campers and counselors over his 95 summers there. Bobby graduated from University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill in 1942 where he was the sole recipient of the prestigious Patterson award for outstanding athletic achievement, playing on the varsity basketball and baseball teams, and was President of the Monogram Club. After serving in WWII, he and his beloved wife of 71 years, the late Libbie Gersten, raised their family in Long Beach, NY where he was a teacher, coach and President of the Board of Education. He was the founding Dean of Students of Nassau Community College. Bobby was devoted to his family and is survived by his adoring children Sharon Luckman and Paul Shapiro, Richard and Annemiek Gersten, Jackie and Monte Ezratty, Ron Gersten; grandchildren Melissa and David Keller, Greg and Beth Luckman, Max Gersten and Chloe Grimes, Thea Gersten, Jake Ezratty, Joanna Ezratty, Ali Gersten, Robbie Gersten; and great-grandchildren Jordana, Aiden, Charley and Casey. Bobby's booming voice and example of a life well-lived will be revered and remembered by the generations of people whose lives he impacted so greatly. A celebration of Bobby Gersten's life will be held on November 18th at 6:30pm at Baruch College's Mason Hall. Bobby G helped me understand what it means to love what you do and to be loved for what you do! Will miss his booming voice and indomitable spirit!

My summers at Brant Lake Camp were a significant part of my formative years, and the culture at BLC can be traced directly back to Bobby G. He really was a larger than life personality, and demonstrated to campers and counselors alike the virtues of healthy competition, camaraderie and teamwork.
I have fond memories of playing tennis with Bobby, and he could still really hit the ball even in his 70s and 80s!
Condolences to Richie, Ron, Max and the rest of the family.

As news spread across the Atlantic of the Death of Bobbie G it was greeted with great sadness as it represents the end of a significant era for BLCers who were selected and indeed privileged to have been chosen by him to share their culture in BLC. They may be a long time ago for me but they certainly formed a major part of my career in education and the provision of service to clients. My son Bryan and I spoke about him this weekend and fondly remembered the different elements of Camp life including the tragic loss of ANDY Dryer that awful night. May he rest in peace with his beloved Libby and all those close to him. Sincere condolences to all at BLC and the extended Gersten family

Thank you Bobby G for all those amazing summers where I learned how to be a good friend, how to compete, how to win, how to lose, and how to cheer (only for your team and not against the other). These lessons/values hold true today in everything I do and I am so happy that my son got to have the same experience at BLC as I did. You leave behind 3 incredible generations that have the same values as you do. These values is why parents continue to send their kids to BLC - as having fun, playing sports, and making friends can be done at any camp. But learning about friendship, sportsmanship, compassion, and the importance of tradition is what BLC is truly about. These values are one of your greatest legacies you leave behind as these life lessons continue to be the most important part of the BLC summer - thanks to Richie and Max and everyone else at BLC.
Yeah Bo!
