ROBERT LEVITHAN Obituary

LEVITHAN--Robert "Bobby".

On May 13, 2016, peacefully at home. Beloved brother, uncle, great-uncle, cousin, nephew, friend, partner, adviser, and counselor. Born in Manhattan, he was raised in Englewood, New Jersey, graduated with a BA in History at the University of Pennsylvania and earned an MA in Transformational Counseling from Southwestern College. While a committed New Yorker, he also spent considerable time in Italy, Venezuela, Brazil and Santa Fe and travelled extensively. His varied experiences included dancing in the movie "Hair" for Twyla Tharp, and performing with Robert Wilson. He also co-produced the first productions of Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues, One Man Band and Word of Mouth. His true calling was as an AIDS and LGBT activist and as a psychotherapist. For many years he facilitated groups and lead workshops, nationally and locally, including at Friends In Deed, where he was Co-Chair of the Board for seven years. He was a regular contributor to The Huffington Post and other popular sites, and his writings were collected into his well- received book, the "New 60: Outliving Yourself and Reinventing a Future." To his family and friends, Bobby's greatest gift was his capacity to be forever caring, giving, vibrant and loving, and to live and face challenges courageously and with grace. His special circle of friends provided him with extraordinary caring and love during his last battle with pancreatic cancer. He will be sorely missed by his two brothers and wives, Allen and Beth and Jack and Roberta, his loving nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, dear cousins, aunts, brothers and sisters- in-law, and many friends. A memorial service will be held on May 22 at 2pm at Riverside Chapel, 180 West 76th Street, New York, NY 10023.

Each day, although with Bobby at peace, I wake up feeling the loss of my really close friend and cousin. We go back 58 years...it's a long time. I loved him, I told him so, but he already knew that. Growing up and spending a week each summer with "the boys" "entertaining" us was a special time and Bobby added his own uniqueness to those visits. He will be missed, his memories are my treasure...Love, Lisa

Robert was one of the giants in my life. His words and wisdom conveyed during Friends In Deed sessions helped me over a long time to deal with my profound grief. Robert taught me to speak and understand the language of grief. I shall miss him terribly but am ever so grateful that he entered my life. Dieter (New York)

While I never had the pleasure of meeting Robert, I enjoyed his posts and shared in the grief over his dog, Sophie. I have read his posts in Huff Post and his book "The New 60..." I had hoped to meet him one day on this earth, but now I shall meet him in our eternal place.

To Roberts family and many friends please accept my most heartfelt sympathies and condolences as you move forward with the many memories you have and will treasure forever.

Cousin Bobby, as kids, we had memorable visits to Jones Beach and Thousand Islands. Endless Shirley Temples at the Victorian Room thanks to your Dad, and scrumptious chocolate cake thanks to your Mom. As supposed grown-ups, stimulating and laughter-filled brunches and dinners in Manhattan. You will be my cousin Forever. Love, Cousin Susan
