ROBERT RIFKIND Obituary

RIFKIND--Robert S. The Jewish Theological Seminary mourns the death of its longtime Trustee, Robert S. Rifkind. Bob was beloved for his towering intellect, brilliant mind, caring heart, and dedication to improving the world. He generously established the Robert S. Rifkind Professorship, anchoring JTS's study of American Jewish history for future generations. Many trustees and faculty sought out, and benefitted from, Bob's personal counsel. It is impossible to measure his profound impact on the institution over the decades. He will be sorely missed. We extend our deepest condolences to Bob's daughters, Amy and Nina, and their families. May they be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. Alan Levine, Chair, Board of Trustees Dr. Shuly Rubin Schwartz, Chancellor

When I think of Robert Rifkind, I think instantly of his fierce intellect, quick wit, rigor and high standards. I was lucky to have known him for most of my life and to have joined his family on many vacations. (He read Gibbon´s "...Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" at the beach. Not what I would call light reading.) If I made a statement about the weather, I had best be prepared to defend it. Years later, when I asked him to speak at our high school graduation, he obliged, quipping that I had asked him not to be "dry." That got a chuckle. He surprised me by welcoming the dog as a visitor once he realized this would scare off the deer. I am so grateful to have joined him recently for a family dinner. True to form, he held court, sharing his brilliance and humor and warmth. He loved his work. He loved learning. He loved his family, including his cherished wife. I always marveled at how such intensely serious people could be so playful and light with each other. He will be profoundly missed. May his memory be a blessing.
