ROBERT SHIMSHAK Obituary

SHIMSHAK--Robert (Bob) Harshorn. Robert (Bob) Harshorn Shimshak died at his home in Berkeley, California, on May 20, 2023, from progressive supranuclear palsy. He was born on May 18, 1947, in Paterson, New Jersey to Morris and Sylvia (Harshorn) Shimshak, both of whom were teachers. He graduated from Rutgers College and Harvard Medical School, becoming a radiologist with a specialty in nuclear medicine. Since childhood, Bob was focused on collecting, everything from stamps to campaign buttons to Pez dispensers. Yet his true passion, collecting art, started when he went to the Haymarket in Boston, looking for a brass bed, only to be captivated by a 19th century daguerreotype. From then on, the die was cast. Bob could visit five museums in a day and still have more than enough energy to visit a gallery or two. He loved talking about art and especially getting to know artists, forging friendships that lasted decades. He also reveled in hosting, with his wife, Marion, a 4th of July party each year, which many of his artist friends would invariably attend. Bob was a trustee of the San Francisco Art Institute, New Langton Arts, and BAMPFA, where he was a longtime chair of BAMFA's Collections Committee. After years of attending Mark Morris's dance programs at Cal Performances, Bob, when initially diagnosed with Parkinson's, found joy at Berkeley Ballet Theater Dance for PD. Bob is survived by his wife, Marion Brenner, his son, Max Shimshak (Jessica), his stepchildren, Galia Szurley (Peter) and Sasha Swetschinski (Jamyn Gavello), and his four grandchildren, Leo, Shawn, Ben, and Kate. Friends wishing to honor Bob's memory may contribute to Berkeley Ballet Theater Dance for PD or the Brain Support Network.

We send our deepest condolences to the Bob's family. He was so gifted in so many ways, but most of all his knowledge of photography. Jim purchased a beautiful print from Bob of Chinatown SF. Now we will remember Bob and his talent each time we look at it. Jim & Candy Naughton

After leaving Rutgers in 1968 we didn´t see each other until we met practicing medicine in the same hospital in CA. We became close friends again.

Bob was my old friend from my art school days. I was a starving artist and he was a starving medical student. He blessed my life with good humor and I was glad to claim him as a lifetime friend. My prayers of comfort for all his family and friends.
Joy and peace, Rev. Cornelia DeLee

We all loved Bob.. remember his tender greetings at the Christmas Party, and his very first question to me. "Do you collect anything?" Dust was not the right answer! Overtime I leaned from him to honor and remember the small things and to make acquaintance with the new- art art and more art. The whimsy was underscored by Marion,Gaia, and all those close to his heart..and Max! Take care you who stood by him at the end. Know that we too are here to stand by you. Love love Candace

Pictures of Bob from over the years. Lots of good memories. He was famous for his annual poem at the Toch and Chambers Christmas party. The most recent picture was taken at my 75th birthday party. We've known each other over 40 years. He taught me a lot of what I know about art. Shelley and I send good wishes to Marion, Galia, Sasha, and Max. Bob was unique and will be missed.

Bob was an inspiring model of courage, intelligence, acceptance, generosity, and good humor to everyone in our Dance for PD class. We all miss him terribly.
