ROBERT STONE

STONE--Robert Samuel. Died October 2016 in Cleveland, OH surrounded by family. He was born in Manhattan in 1922 to Ione Aronson Stone and Samuel Stone. He graduated from Brooklyn College in 1942, served in the US Navy from 1942-1946, and received his M.D. from SUNY Downstate in 1950 (charter member of Alpha Omega Alpha). He received residency training at Columbia P&S before becoming Associate Professor of Pathology UCLA. He was also a Visiting Scientist Rockefeller Institute 1959 and Chief Research Pathologist Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission Hiroshima/Nagasaki 1960. He became the first Chairman of Pathology of University of New Mexico, and rose to the level of Dean of the College of Medicine. He was visiting professor of management at MIT before becoming Director of the NIH from 1973-1975. He was then Dean and Vice President at Oregon Health Sciences Center to 1977. He served as Dean of Medicine Texas A&M University until 1987, Deputy Chancellor Texas A&M University to 1989, and Emeritus Dean, Medicine Texas A&M University 1999. He also served as delegate for 10 years, AMA section of Medical schools as well as chairing numerous medical school accreditation committees for the AAMC. He was predeceased by his sister, Natalie Stone Rifkin. He is survived by his wife, Mary Stone, daughter, Lael Stone, M.D., brother, Paul (Helen) Stone, grandsons, Matthew and Geoffrey Schoonmaker, eight nieces and nephews.
