ROGER MACKINNON Obituary
The Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research mourns the loss of its former director, Roger A. MacKinnon, M.D. A master clinician and teacher, he was a towering figure who trained many generations of us. He leaves his mark in our work and in his unique textbook The Psychiatric Interview in Clinical Practice. His was a gift that keeps on giving. Memorial Service will be in the fall. Contributions may be made to the Roger A. MacKinnon Scholarship Fund, c/o Columbia University Psychoanalytic Center, 1051 Riverside Drive, #63, New York, NY 10032. Eric R. I started psychoanalysis with Dr. MacKinnon in 1981, after I determined he was smarter than I was--my secret test for choosing my doctor. I knew nothing else about him. It was the luckiest day of my life. I began as an outwardly successful 26-year old lawyer, but with deep depression and repression so severe, I never spoke out loud my true vocabulary or sense of humor. Ten years later, thanks to Dr. MacKinnon's vanguard utilization of multiple psychiatric schools of thought, and emphasis on behavior modification, I emerged with my real personality intact, happily transformed into the life of the party. While I am extremely saddened that Dr. MacKinnon has left this world, his memory, his work, and his pithy advice will be with me always. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. May his memory be for a blessing.

To the Mackinnon Family: My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there's a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.
